New album from Andrea Koziol and Bill Brennan!
It’s a collection of music that spans almost 100 years of fantastic songwriting, performed by musicians who are not afraid to explore and improvise and jump from any cliff they can find. It’s a spirited conversation full of flat 13s between the best of friends…and they hope you enjoy eavesdropping.
At 14 years of age, PAIGE PENNEY will surely be the youngest person to perform at Fred’s. But then, not just any 14 year old can enlist a cast of local musicians in support of her official release that includes Darren ‘Boobie” Browne ( The BURNING HELL, KUBASONICS, SHERRY RYAN BAND. AMELIA CURRAN and many more), Josh Ward ( HEY ROSETTA!) and Elliott Dicks (NOVAKS, AMELIA CURRAN, DENIS PARKER, JANET CULL and more). Furthermore, how many 14 year olds can acquire the services of THE ONCE, Newfoundland & Labrador’s most successful international combo over the past decade on her debut recording and video? Not only that but Paige recorded her debut in Nashville at the same studio as TAYLOR SWIFT, an artist whom she admires and indeed bears some musical similarities with as pertains to Swift’s early work. See where I’m going here?
Paige has been making music most of her young life. She plays guitar, trumpet, piano, bass and sings with SHALLAWAY YOUTH CHOIR. When I asked her if she was hoping/planning to pursue a career in music, she beamed, “Oh, I’m all in”. Her mom nodded in agreement. The road to success in the entertainment/music field is arduous, long-winding and ripe with challenges, but Paige is truly talented, committed and has tremendous support from the most important people, her family, friends and musicians alike.
Brand new EP from local trio, Property!
Property is the indie-pop trio of Sarah Harris (guitar/vocals), Jack Etchegary (guitar/drum machine), and Liam Wight (bass). Formed in a university dorm room as a recording project, the band began performing live when they obtained a drum machine for free. Since their 2016 release of demo style songs under a fake record label Riverview Records, Property has played with bands such as Toronto’s July Talk, Alvvays, and Dilly Dally, and Peterborough’s The Burning Hell. Recorded in Montreal in 2017, their first official release, Privacy, and was nominated for three Music NL awards and has been described by the CBC as “edgy pop music with intricate musicality and thoughtful lyrics.” The lack of drum kit means the band travels lightly–they’ve toured eastern canada and appeared on stages at NXNE, Ottawa Explosion Weekend, Halifax Pop Explosion, and Lawnya Vawnya.
Debut full-length album from Newfoundland’s own, Cassidy Rich!
Latest from Patrick Canning! Collaboration with the inimitable Steve Abbott of Geinus, Be Alright and Local Tough fame, an insane riff machine and lovely human being and came up with a new band project called Paper Skull. The result is an album a good bit heavier and wilder on guitar freakouts than one of my typical Sad Tax albums but it’s full of gentler grooves and introspective experimental moments.
Latest from Newfoundland-born songstress, Damhnait Doyle! She unleashed her innermost self with her latest album,Liquor Store Flowers. Liquor Store Flowers tells the stories of a lifetime of heartbreaks and heartwarming experiences.

Yet another in a series of jaw-droppingly good records from Victor Lewis, floating around in the classic rock and psychedelic realms without firmly setting foot in one or the other.
Victor Lewis has much in common with Mark Oliver Everett, Grandaddy, Beck and Badly Drawn Boy, all of them spilling over with creative juices and dexterity. You will never, ever grow tired of one of his records.
Seriously… never!
Victor Lewis (a.k.a. Vickee Lou, Vic Lou, etc.) is arguably Newfoundland’s most innovative and eclectic indie-pop artist. We liken him to a young David Bowie.
J. Terry Hynes grew up on the old road in the fishing and farming community of Port Au Port, NL. His remarkable talent has taken him over highways and byways to clubs and concert venues coast to coast across Canada, for over 60 years. His latest recording captures the excitement an d spontaneity of his inimitable performance of original tunes, vintage country and blues infused classics.

Strength in the face of the challenges of everyday life is best shown through quiet confidence and positivity. That’s the approach to life presented by Newfoundland pianist and composer Wade Tarling in his debut solo piano album, Strength. Born in Burnaby, BC, Tarling has been playing the piano for 20 years and has honed his talent under such esteemed musicians as John Medeski, Billy Martin, Chris Woodand John Scofield. In this album, Tarling brings to bear all that fine musical training as well as the experiences he has had performing all over the world.
Overcoming a life-changing health scare, Paul Brace throws his life and passion into his debut solo album, Liars & Actors.
Full of uptempo, poppy anthems that vibrate between the early 80’s and alt-rock 90s, the majority of Paul Brace’s Liars and Actors doesn’t tonally fit with what one might call a “meditation.” But for all intents and purposes, the album is an 8-song attempt to find peace amidst a storm.
The entire concept behind Liars & Actors mirrors Brace’s battle with cancer, and his innermost struggles on how to deal with the sobering reality, while putting on a brave face for friends and family.
He has worked diligently with Young Adult Cancer Canada, attending seminars and retreats, and also aims to give back much of the albums proceeds to young adults who are affected by cancer. Liars & Actors is dedicated to each and every one of them.
Brothers Mark Cherwick (7) and Jacob Cherwick (19). Performing hardcore-punk songs inspired by topics such as minions, siblings, school & food among other things.

Their eclectic approach to writing has produced a wide variety of songs, ranging from hard hitting alt-rock (Diversion, Pulse), to pop-rock (Glass, Body, Moth), and ambient indie (Both Sides, Stay the Same), all of which will be available on their MusicNL supported sophomore album, ‘The Missing Mouth’ (coming, Sept. 28th, 2018).

Debut release from Mike Mosher, Jared Pardy and Alex Luscombe, who make up the band Dora.
Dora began when singer and songwriter Liam Peacock took to a small saltbox cottage on Conception Bay. Inspired by everything from hitchhiking across Canada to small-town life, he emerged with a record’s worth of quirky, melodic songs. Dora has grown from an intimate studio project to a powerful and versatile band, with a sound that ranges from jangly acoustic tunes to spaced out art-rock.
“I just want to say to all members. Thank you so much for your support and encouragement. Your likes and comments mean so much to me. I cannot express in words how it makes me feel. Most people do not realize how hard it is for me to post my songs for others to see. The confidence did not come easy but your support has made it easier for me. I love each and every one of you for helping me to slowly grow and to feel secure enough to post my videos and to someday come out of my music room’ – Hartel Lawless

The Dandelion Few are an Indie folk duo based Dundalk, Ireland and St. John’s, Newfoundland, whose harmony rich music has been often been compared to that of the Handsome Family and Gillian Welch with David Rawlings. Throughout late 2016 and 2017 they acquired extensive mileage having performed various shows in such far flung places as Newfoundland, Scotland and Glastonbury 17. The pair have adopted a strong folk idiom and base much of their music within that sphere touching on contemporary themes whilst also giving light to more traditional subjects such as mining life and near forgotten ghost stories. Always hungry to write and create, the pair completed writing residency in Slovenia for October to explore and potentially add to the folk canon of Ireland & Newfoundland with the theme of Island life in mind. The Dandelion Few’s live performances have been described as “What it would have been like if Townes Van Zandt met the Felice brothers”, a statement they hold with pride as they are set to make a name for themselves in the near future.
Savage guitar solo’s jump out of a tasty memphis groove, BAM. That poor harmonica being relentlessly squeezed for every ounce of soul. When a bass player and a drummer have been playing together for 25 years, magic. And who doesn’t like a well crafted song? Catchy, heartfelt and ridiculously easy to dance to, this band is a bonafide good time. Dave Mundy was nominated for Best Blues Recording in 2015 by MusicNL. This is his debut with this lineup!

Latest album from Weary (Kate Lahey). The music is moody, effectively sparse, and grabs ahold of your very core. The sentiments are elevated by the rare quality of her soul-soothing vocals. “Bruise” is the kind of song you can love upon first listen, and leave on repeat for a silly-long spin.
