Private Eye Jake Doyle returns for a raucous second season of CBC’s “Republic of Doyle , solving cases, dodging punches and chasing criminals through the hilly, colourful streets of seaside St. John’s. Allan Hawco stars as the charming and irreverent detective who struggles daily to navigate the complications of running the family P.I. business while keeping his tangled private life in check – and there’s also juggling the problems of the people in his life he can’t live with (or without): colleague/stepmother Rose Miller (Lynda Boyd); vandal turned P.I apprentice Des Courtney (Mark O’Brien); enterprising niece Tinny (Marthe Bernard) and his father and partner in solving crime Malachy (Sean Mcinley).  This sophomore season brings a couple of new faces to the Republic while a couple of old foes make a return visit to take on the Doyles.

The Wonderful Grand Band’s phenomenal hit TV series of the early 80s changed the face of Newfoundland culture.  Starring Tommy Sexton and Greg Malone this unique collection features some of the funniest Newfoundland characters of all time – Mr. Budgell and Dickie, Nanny Hynes, Mavis and Carmel Ann – together with the irresistible sounds of the ground-breaking Wonderful Grand Band – Ron Hynes, Sandy Morris, Glenn Simmons, Jamie Snider, Ian Perry and Paul Boomer Stamp.  

“Young Triffie” is a comic tale of mystery, disorder, and madness.  When unlucky Newfoundland Ranger Hepditch (Fred Ewanuick) is sent out to the isolated outport of Swyer’s Harbour to investigate a mysterious sheep mutilation, he finds himself in the middle of a vicious murder.  In way over his head, he stumbles through the investigation where the quiet life of the seemingly respectable locals becomes turned upside down.

This DVD was produced using the only available footage of Corey and Trina performances.  Both professional and amateur footage was used.  Please be advised that at times the picture and sound quality many not be up to broadcast standards.

Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers presents their first full-length performance video.  A Cultures Canada concert shot at the Astrolabe Stage in Ottawa in the summer of 1996, this program focuses on selections from their latest album “Pop the Rivets”.  Such zany numbers as “Fruiti Loopy” and “O Danny Moo” are mixed with beautiful ballads like “Big North Wind” and “Til Early Morning”.  Also included are all-time favourites, “Sarah”, “The Pits” and “Chainsaw Earle”.

This show highlights the stage act which Billboard Magazine has called “one of Canada’s greatest cultural treasures” .  It’s a delight for anyone who enjoys a great music flavoured with a good measure of fast-moving comedy.

Inthe tradition of “Saving Grace” and Waking Ned Devine” comes the comedy about how far people will go to maintain their grip on life.

Dave Purcell (Hurt) just woke up on the wrong side of life.  His marriage is dead and his restaurant just went belly up.  Things look pretty bad for Dave until his eccentric neighbour comes to the rescue.

Alphonse, Dave’s neighbour, hatches a mad-yet-ingenious scheme in the hopes of saving his buddy’s sagging fortunes.  After staging the sightings of an extremely rare bird in the neighbourhood, birdwatchers and hungry patrons the world over, flock to the area.  The hoax succeeds far beyond expectations and business booms.  But little does anyone know, Alphonse is working on a few other secret plans which will soon have Dave’s restaurant swimming in controversy.  With the threat of exposure, the authorities on the trail, will feathers fly?

At the mid-point of the 20th century, Joey Smallwood led Newfoundland into Confederation.  For this act, he is both worshipped and reviled.  This compelling biography explores the public and private sides of the man who held onto power for 23 years.

Rare archival footage, readings from his journals and candid interviews document his journey from firebrand socialist in New York to journalist and crusading labour organizer back home.  Defeated in 1971, Smallwood spent his retirement working on an encyclopaedia of Newfoundland, to ensure that history doesn’t forget him.  In 1991, “the little fellow from Gambo” died at age 90.
