Scott Gilbert – Savage Mugup

Monday, April 21st, 2014

“When I first heard Springsteen’s “Born to Run” I knew that I had to do everything in my power to get my hands on an American made Tele and a killer amp! I wanted to be the one writing lyrics that would touch people in that way, I wanted to be the voice stood out from the crowd.

I have been writing songs for a long time now and I have shared them with people in Canada, Scotland, Chile, Denmark and all points in between! I finally got the courage up to put my favorites on a disc and titled it “Savage Mugup”
Its a musical story that has been influenced by Rock, Blues and Country. Inspired by the people and places I’ve seen around the world and in my small hometown of Greens Harbour Newfoundland…..right here at the edge of the earth!!
So join me on this journey through love loss and
freedom, embrace the lyrics and feel the soul of
my songs. I hope you enjoy the music as much
as I enjoy sharing with you……Peace!!” – from musicscottgilbert.ca

The Discounts – Part One

Monday, November 4th, 2013

Do you like beats? The Discounts got beats, and you’re going to eat them up. Neil Conway’s ‘The Discounts, Part One’, is almost too funky. A little hip-hop mixed with a lot of reggae is evidently the recipe for awesome music. Some other essential ingredients to this dyno-mite, musical stew is some quality accompaniment from well known favourtes, such as Curtis Andrews, Pat Boyle, and Duane Andrews.

The Black Bags – The Black Bags

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013

Upon listening to the Black Bags self-titled CD, one is struck by a couple of key features. Firstly, Liz  Solo is still at the top of her game and continues to be the premier female rock vocalist in NL. 20 plus years and going strong. Secondly, Retro-Rules, the early/mid 1990’s in this case, and thirdly, Marcel Levandier’s development as the yin to Liz’s Yang as a lead vocalist.

The disc opens strong. “Kelowna Rocks” dives at you like a spirited invitation with Liz displaying Chrissie Hynde, Johnette Napolitano verve on lead vocal, followed by an invigorating lead from Marcel on “Worth Living” buffed by tasty back-up vocals.

“Raining Hammers” is an album hilight and shows off the band’s punk roots with a clink of the glass to early influence, Mike Wade, the song’s author.

Tracks 4-7 favorably harken back to classic Concrete Blonde, Buffalo Tom, and Lou Reed. “Held Down” with biting rhythm and lyrics, reeking of frustration and stress, “Secret” is beautiful and timeless in quality and “Horizon” rivals Tragically Hip for intensity while exhibiting more punk roots.

“Everything is Leaking” has a R.E.M. vibe, and “Lost and Learning”, the album’s closer, is a gorgeous, reflective dirge.

Recorded and mixed expertly by Jony Richardson and Grant King- one of 2013’s best NL releases.

Now available on LP!

The Combine – Witness

Saturday, October 12th, 2013

New to St. John’s, The Combine have gained a fan base and significant experience in Stephenville. Playing together for over three years, they’ve developed a distinct and rare prog-metal sound.

Mastodon, Kyuss, and Protest the Hero are some of the intense influences on these metal lovers. Supreme produced, there is a crystal-clear distinction between instrumentation and vocals, an essential element to their appeal.

In the midst of all the heavy complex metal are tasteful sections of musical white space followed by explosions of guitar-shredding. These boys know what a breakdown means and how to use it.

Intense and interesting, truly talented.

Danielle Smith – Little Seeds

Saturday, October 12th, 2013

Auspicious debut from Newfoundland singer/songwriter. Recorded in Halifax, will appeal to fans of Ruth Moody, Kelly Willis, and slightly edgy alt-country chanteuses.

Danielle possesses a compelling voice – a mix of sweetness and bar-stool attitude.

‘Little Seeds’ is an invitation to discover this emerging talent – very impressive.

Sonny Tripp – Zoo

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013

A perfect example of the hip sounds of the St. John’s music circuit.

This is definitive alternative rock. A 16 track collection smattered with heavy guitar riffs and remnants of The Cure, The Shins, Arcade Fire, and Broken Social Scene throughout.

This is a really cool album, all group members in on the composing while utilizing pedals, distortion, and surf-rock vocals.

Unquestionably one of 2013’s finest offerings of current rock with a nod and a wink to old school.

Rising Sun – Sound of Gravity

Tuesday, June 25th, 2013

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? We know very little about this CD by ‘Rising Sun’. Here’s what we do know about them; musician Michael Nicholle, from Corner Brook, NL, supported by vocalist Shane Nicholle, and drummer Paul Bradbury, deliver 11 tracks reminiscent of early Oasis, Sloan and House of Love. And it’s quite good – vibrant pop/rock n’roll with a good arrangement sensibility.

Mercury Topaz – 2

Tuesday, April 9th, 2013

On their second outing, Mercury Topaz have begun to incorporate new elements into their post-cold wave sound. You can hear Zappa-isms and hints of Ween creeping into the sound, although the solid melodic foundation is still there.

Mercury Topaz (Victor Lewis and Brad Power) follow their collective muse producing an easy blast of pop pieces.  Little bits of Zappa-esque vocal styilings permeate the mix, a scattering of 70s R&B grooves and you just know Paul McCartney would get off on the jams.  Track 7 could have been a Joy Division demo.  You have to luv these guys.

Victor Lewis (a.k.a. Vickee Lou, Vic Lou, etc.) is arguably Newfoundland’s most innovative and eclectic indie-pop artist.  We liken him to a young David Bowie.

Brad Power is highly recognizable on the St. John’s circuit.  Modestly calling himself “just a guitar player”, everyone in town and beyond, from the past greats to the young slingers consider Brad the most dexterous and talented guitarist on the scene – and that’s a fact.

This duo is a dream team.

H2O – As Still Waters Go

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

H2O is the brain-child of Gord Harris, a Newfoundlander now living in British Columbia. It is a blend of contemplative folk/country, similar in sound to Kris Kristofferson.

The album is a mostly acoustic outing with simple accompaniment played expertly. Instruments are acoustic and electric guitar, fiddle, piano, bass, and mandolin and mellotron.

The incredible Steve Dawson joins the outfit on National steel, Dobro, pedal steel and “wicked” guitar.

Rajaton – Kevat

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

With “Kevat”, Rajaton moved into a more pop style. Released in 2005, “Kevat” peaked at #3 in the Finnish pop charts and sold gold within 6 weeks of its release.

Rajaton is an exceptional vocal sextet from Finland who have made their mark in the international acapella scene. They sing in English and in Finnish. They are frequent guests of the Festival 500 International Choral Festival in St. John’s, Newfoundland where, since 2001, they have wowed audiences at their concerts and earned the admiration and friendship of visiting choirs at their workshops.
Their name Rajaton, which means “boundless”, refers to the breadth of styles of the music they perform. We think it also describes their ability, imagination and ability.

Heather Thorne – Puzzles & Games

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

“Puzzles and Games” is the second release from Heather Thorne. It is an offering of co-written original songs with a modern, hooky, pop-country sound. It is a fiery, up-tempo record reminiscent of current pop-country superstars, Miranda Lambert and Gretchen Wilson. Heather struts confidently on top of these catchy, electric guitar laden songs. She is a clever, heart-on-sleeve songwriter with a strong voice and is a welcome and rare talent in Newfoundland’s small but blooming country music scene.

Sherry Ryan – Sister of Mine

Monday, February 20th, 2012

“Sister of Mine” marks the third release for multiple Music Newfoundland and Labrador winner Sherry Ryan. Known for her autobiographical and earnest songwriting Sherry continues her strength for the craft on “Sister of Mine”. Sherry is skilled at penning love songs proving that a mix of love gained, love kept and love lost makes for a heartfelt exploration of the human heart and condition. On this record Sherry enlists the help of producer/musician Phil Sedore (Amelia Curran’s War Brides and Juno winning album Hunter, Hunter). He plays the majority of the instruments on the album and it has his signature folk, country flavour. The album has a lilting, meandering gait that paints a portrait of a warm, thoughtful night at the far end of summer. Sister of Mine is a lovely and poignant follow-up to her aptly titled second release, “Wonderful Cures”.
