Ol Billy Bob Boy dropped by with his brand new CD, “Sweltering Sun”. Featuring all originals, self-produced and with the help of a fine cast, Bill Simms serves up a strong mix of C&W/Folk infused numbers, some cheeky-humorous, some back-porch casual and some truly poignant. “Darlin You Look Great” could almost pass as a John Prine and female guest duet while “Snow Angel” has a Fred Eaglesmith vibe and “Carrie Ann” a touch of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. But it’s “Your Wife Said You were Gone” that jumps as the sheer beauty on this very charming and delightful debut.
For fans of John Prine, Jim Stafford, Louden Wainwright III and Roger Miller. Thanks for supporting our artists.

Congratulations Atlantic String Quartet on their new release, on sale now at Fred’s! It is a lovely CD of pre-World War 1 string quartet music by 2 young composers. The English pastoralism of Arthur Bliss and the finesse of French master Maurice Ravel share a connected sound-world.
It’s an enchanting combination by our very own Atlantic String Quartet, of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. Well done Heather Kao, Nancy Case-Oates, Kate Read, & Theo Weber.

You’d be hard pressed to find a more accomplished celtic/folk band on ‘the rock’ right now than Rum Ragged. Romantic in the most classic sense, their sound is awash in button accordion, bouzokuki, tenor banjo, and bodhran. With lead vocals shared by leaders Mark Manning and Aaron Collis, the harmonies float with comfort and natural ease. Musically exquisite, rootey but sophisticated, this is not so much pub music as it is the sound of the north atlantic breeze reflected in wistfully lyrical song.

The much-anticipated solo album from Newfoundland’s west coast singer/songwriter has arrived in both CD and Vinyl. The multi-award winning folk/pop artist offers ‘slice of life’ observations not unlike Paul Simon and John Prine over the course of their catalogues which accentuates his mass appeal to varied tastes. Like all authentic storytellers, Downey reflects on wanderings and returnings in his story songs. The splendid application of strings further enhances his poignant snapshots of people, places, growth and changes. He truly is one of his province’s premier musical figures
