The Secrets – Break Even

Wednesday, June 11th, 2014

Atlantic Canada has a rich tradition of country music – from Anne Murray to Hank Snow and Don Messier’s Jubilee from the shores of Prince Edward Island…rural fishing and farming communities gathered around radios and dance halls to the lonesome sounds of the fiddle, accordion and that westbound train.

From the isolated great Northern Peninsula on the Island of Newfoundland to small Sibley’s Cove and the outskirts of St. John’s would come three women steeped in a history of place and of harmony. In rural Newfoundland as long as folks could recall, music was often the only form of recreation. As a result the province punches way above its weight when it comes to talent and these three songbirds are no exception.

The Secrets met in college studying performance and recording. Quickly discovering a natural blend to not only their voices but their musical aspirations as well; they traded jigs and reels for whiskey, mandolins and faded jeans.

This captivating country folk trio is made up of Newfoundland’s Karla Pilgrim, Terri Lynn Eddy and Renée Batten. All accomplished solo performers, each has seen East Coast Music Association and Music Newfoundland and Labrador nominations for their efforts but it is together they have experienced the greatest recognition. After opening for Country Music Legend Alan Jackson on his 2010 Freight Train Tour, The Secrets would perform in front of 18,000 in three short days.

A direct result of their success at those concerts, the secret is now out! Last summer they started their own rumors as far away as Vancouver Island on their first cross Canada tour which will saw stops in Saskatchewan at The Ness Creek Festival, Nova Scotia at The prestigious Stan Rogers Folk Festival and everywhere in between. Their proficiency as not only vocalists but on a variety of stringed instruments has captivated audiences coast to coast.

Regarding Our Father – The Life and Times of Gerald S. Doyle

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

Gerald S. Doyle was a businessman, folksong collector, and founder of The Doyle Bulletin.  He was also an avid filmmaker.  In the 1930’s, 1940’s and 50’s, Doyle traveled Newfoundland and coastal Labrador on his motor yacht ‘Miss Newfoundland’, calling into hundreds of outports.  He stood on the deck of his boat and rolled 16mm colour film, leaving us an unparalleled historical view of the outports from the water.

Colleen Power – For Little Ones

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Colleen has been a well-loved fixture on the St. John’s music scene for over a decade. She is a clever writer with an often biting, sarcastic wit. She is a keen observer of society and everyday life and puts an intelligent and poignant spin on all of her songs. Even those with a comedic theme and lyric often have an underlying social message or commentary. (i.e. her SOCAN/Music Newfoundland and Labrador Song of the Year nominated song, Townie Man). “For Little Ones” is departure from the folk-pop sound that Colleen has become known for. It is, as the name suggests, an album for kids. Colleen has two young daughters and it’s not hard to believe that motherhood may have spurred her to make a children’s record. The album features legendary bluegrass group, Crooked Stovepipe, arguably one of the finest bluegrass bands in Atlantic Canada. They provide an appropriately light and fun backdrop for the stories Colleen is singing. Banjo, mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar and upright bass deliver the famous folk-roots sound makes bluegrass such a beloved style. “For Little Ones” is a feel good album, one you can turn on for your kids and enjoy for yourselves as well. The music is interesting and very well-played and Colleen’s vocal delivery is honest and warm, the obvious effect of having small children. It has been one of our best sellers in the past year or so and when you hear it for yourself you’ll understand why.

Roger Howse – Long Time Comin’

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

This record really was a long time coming. Roger began and finished recording the album almost ten years ago. It is a fantastic example of his immense talent for acoustic blues. The style, faithfulness to form and expertise that he brings to this classic approach to blues is amazing. Howse is, firstly, an incredible guitarist. He does the work of two players in many cases, riding the bass notes with his thumb while executing beautifully melodic and soulful riffs with his fingers. He negates the need for a band and, much like Robert Johnson and the great solo blues guitarists of the past, he says more with one guitar, six strings and two hands than most could say with a symphony of musicians. When he does decide to share guitar duties, it is with St. John’s blues monster (and our very own Fred’s staffer) Steve Hussey (Duane Andrews Band, Peter Narvaez). Hussey is an accomplished “lefty” guitarist whose prowess for impromptu blues is unrivaled in the city. The coming together of these two blues aficionados is a real treat and they play off of each other perfectly. Vocally, Roger has a voice that has seen the inside of many bars and night clubs. It is worn and has a gravelly rasp that is both charming and conducive to performing this style of music with conviction. There is an honest “I’ve lived these tunes” type of quality that is candid and truthful and really allows the listener to connect the man to the story. Roger is the real deal, one of the finest bluesmen around. We’re glad he finally put this record out. Even if you’re not a huge blues fan the musicianship is of the highest degree and his performance transcends genre. If you are a fan you’re in for some serious chops and some fine acoustic blues!

Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers – The Serious Stuff

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

The Serious Stuff collects 20 of Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers’ more serious and contemplative traditional tunes. Including a generous helping of reels and jigs and otherwise overlooked folk tunes, as well as now-classic songs and ballads such as “Sarah” and “Salt Water Joys”.

Emile Benoit – Vive la Rose

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

Emile is regarded as, perhaps, the greatest fiddler to come from Newfoundland. Discovered by Newfoundland legends, Figgy Duff, Emile went from playing his original fiddle tunes in his kitchen to sharing them at major folk festivals all over the world. Vive la Rose was Emile’s last recording. His unique style , a blend of French and indigenous musical flare and a deep catalogue of tunes, jigs, reels and airs has been studies, played, interpreted, recorded and revered by many musicians throughout the years.

Katie Baggs – Home Again, Home Again

Monday, June 18th, 2012

Katie’s star is definitely rising provincially and “Home Again, Home Again” has been met with much critical and popular praise. Paired down, stark and hauntingly beautiful acoustic folk with accents of violin and wistful harmony and minimal percussion are married with Katie’s strong and naturally imagistic lyricism. Her voice is airy and ethereal, her performance; understated and delicate. This is a quiet and contemplative jewel of a record.

Shanneyganock – The Tunes

Monday, February 20th, 2012

This is a collection of instrumental favourites spanning the entire recording history of Shanneyganock (Including Mark’s solo album- “The Music Takes Me Back”). Tunes that you’ve come to love are now on one album. Mark Hiscock is arguably one of Newfoundland’s most accomplished accordion players and his fingers are on fire on these tunes. This, coupled with a guest appearance by Billy Sutton (the Fables) and Chris’s token rowdiness give the album a great lift and flow. A blend of live and studio recordings make this an exciting, energy-soaked must have for anyone who appreciates the skill and vitality of these instrumental classics.

All the Wiles – Painted

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Winners of the Atlantis Music prize for Newfoundland’s best new release of 2011, All the Wiles represent part of the next generation of folk music in the province. With vocal and songwriting credit split between Katie Baggs (Dead Language) and Jared Klok, “Painted” is wistful, melodic and earthy. Beautiful, naturalistic themes and imagery are heightened by elements of folk, blues and Americana. It is a poignant and stirring debut to be sure.

There is no greater or better exponent of Country and Western music in Newfoundland than the MusicNL award winner, Craig Young. But Craig is not your billboard Top 40 C&W. He’s a little Merle Haggard mixed with a dose of Townes Van Zandt and Rodney Crowell. As a guitarist think Glen Campbell meets Marty Stuart – an exquisite picker, astute and soulful. This solo show is the “Jewel of the Crown” in his canon to date.

Recorded live at the Garrick Theater in Bonavista, Newfoundland in 2013 and 2014.

Denis Parker – Snowman Blues

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

“Listening to Memphis Slim sing and play the blues on BBC radio when I was sixteen was a revelation.  It led me down the levee to many other bluesmen and women.  The passionate expression that these artists bared inspired me greatly.  The songs on this CD are a tribute to those artists.  Since settling in Newfoundland I have been embraced by the people and the land on which we live.  There are songs on this CD that I have lived with for a long time, and some that are recent compositions.  ‘Snowman Blues’ is a work of contrasts, hot and cold, black and white, home and away.  I am fortunate to have met and played with some great spirits, and a few of them are present on this recording.  I sincerely hope you enjoy listening to these songs and that they can take you to a better place for a while.  The blues is a healing. ”

– Denis Parker

Chris Andrews and Mark Hiscock – Newfoundland

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Chris Andrews and Mark Hiscock began as a duo performing to the accolades of many on board the tour schooner the Scademia. Their popularity as entertainers prompted them to record an album to sell to the many tourists who asked for a recording by them. This gig moved from the boat to the clubs as they became favorites amongst the downtown goers. Andrews and Hiscock have recently added bass and drums and have formed the group Shanneyganock.

Kim Stockwood – Back to the Water

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

Kim says that this is the album she’s wanted to make her whole career. She is fiercely proud of it and is certainly one of our most patriotic ambassadors abroad. After experiencing massive success with her album “Bonavista”, featuring her award-winning hit Jerk, great success as a solo artist and with the trio Shaye (with Damhnait Doyle and Tara McLean) she decided to make a record of traditional Newfoundland songs. They are a collection of songs that featured prominently in her years spent growing up in Newfoundland and have acted as ballast, keeping her grounded during her time spent away from home. “I grew up listening to my Dad play accordion and my Grandma play pump organ. The songs on this record are songs that I love and songs I hope my kids will love long after I’m gone. “Back to the Water” is a sparse, gentle and reverently performed album. It is subdued as though the songs contained on it were three minute sermons. They have a folky lilt, are acoustic at their core and are accentuated by some of Newfoundland’s finest folk and traditional acts (The Once and The Dardanelles). It also features Kim’s 2011 SOCAN songwriter of the year nominated song “Back to the Water, a song that she began writing a decade ago. It was finished during the recording of this record. It came to completion during a writing session with friend and musical collaborator, Damhnait Doyle (who appears on the album) while the two were atop Signal Hill, a fitting way to round out such a deeply personal record.

Shanneygannock – A Tribute to the McNulty Family

Monday, February 20th, 2012

This lovely tribute holds all of the things that you’ve come to love about Shanneyganock: the energy, gusto, musicianship and love for the traditional form. Chris Andrews and Mark Hiscock are in fine voice on this record as well. They truly pay attention to the details that made the McNulty family an institution here in Newfoundland. Even before arriving on the island, the McNulty’s were revered and loved as the first family of Irish music. Shanneyganock adhere to this fact and offer up a wonderful tribute. This is perhaps their most authentically traditional album to date and arguably their best. Chris’s unmistakable voice, Mark’s lightening fast button accordion and some special guests make this a gem of a record. This is how Sunday morning should sound; goes well with a mug ‘a tea and toutons.

Amelia Curran – War Brides

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Although not Amelia’s first record, “War Brides” was the album that introduced her as a force in Canadian songwriting. It perked the ears of major industry professionals and exposed her to thousands of new fans eager to absorb her deeply intelligent, thought-provoking and self-reflecting style of writing. Based on the strength of her songs and the unwavering guidance of our very own Tony Ploughman, Amelia was signed to one of Canada’s most respected and popular record labels, Six Shooter Records. Six Shooter re-released War Brides on a national level and its success was immediate. When you listen to the record it becomes clear quite quickly, why so many people have gravitated to it. For many, it’s her voice and it’s tender, smoky tone. For others, it’s the depth and profoundness of her writing, colourful and inward-reaching, self-deprecating and universal. She is a true poet and despite considering herself a performer and musician second, she summons a beautiful and articulate performance on War Brides. The openness and vulnerability are very becoming and at times it feels, from a listener’s perspective, that you are a voyeur watching Curran as she gives private confession. She is frank and forthcoming with her narratives and there is a courage and confidence implicit in such exposure.

Hey Rosetta! – Plan Your Escape EP

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Hey Rosetta! – Into Your Lungs

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

(and Around in Your Heart and on Through Your Blood)

This is the album that really made people stand up and take serious notice of Newfoundland’s biggest and most critically acclaimed rock band. “Into Your Lungs” was named Album of the Year at the inaugural Verge Music Awards, held by XM Satellite Radio’s The Verge. The prestigious award, which came with a $25,000 prize, was chosen by fans via online vote. The band was also a finalist for the Artist of the Year. HR was nominated for four East Coast Music Awards at the 2009 ECMAs in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and took home three awards including Group Recording of the Year, Recording of the Year, and Alternative Recording of the Year, all for “Into Your Lungs”. Lead singer and primary songwriter, Tim Baker was also nominated for songwriter of the year. To add to their rapid success following the release of the record, the band was short listed for the revered Polaris Music Prize. This would be the first of two short list nominations to date. The band gained further attention after the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games when their song “Red Heart” was featured in Stephen Brunt’s Olympic Montage video celebrating Canada’s national pride. “Into Your Lungs”, produced by Hawksley Workman was a significant growth from the bands debut, Plan Your Escape. Lyrically, Tim showed a strong and confident development, digging deep into the feelings and experiences conjured by the bands new life of constant touring and travel. The road produced some beautiful songs. The album starts earnestly with New Goodbye, a declaration of leaving and longing for new experiences. “Get your things. We’re leaving. When the morning birds are singing we’ll be sailing”, exclaims Baker on the tracks opening line. The record is centered on the bands powerful and dynamic live show. The songs start as earnest offerings and end anthemically with the electric guitar and multi-layered string arrangements that have become the bands signature sound. The album was a daring and adventurous leap from “Plan Your Escape” and thrust the band onto the National stage a one of Canada’s most important and up and coming indie bands.

Sherman Downey – New Beautiful

Tuesday, May 12th, 2020

The much-anticipated solo album from Newfoundland’s west coast singer/songwriter has arrived in both CD and Vinyl. The multi-award winning folk/pop artist offers ‘slice of life’ observations not unlike Paul Simon and John Prine over the course of their catalogues which accentuates his mass appeal to varied tastes. Like all authentic storytellers, Downey reflects on wanderings and returnings in his story songs. The splendid application of strings further enhances his poignant snapshots of people, places, growth and changes. He truly is one of his province’s premier musical figures.

Karrie Obed & Mark Turner – Imgiguset/Trumpet Hymns

Saturday, May 21st, 2016

These songs were recorded in the summer of 2015. The idea came when Karrie Obed (tenor) traveled to Herrnhut, Germany to participate as a member of the Nain Brass Band in the annual Blasertreffen der Brudergemeine (Moravian Brass Band Festival). Karrie plays euphonium and trumpet in the Nain Band. Their repertoire includes most of the hymns on this recording. The international participants in the festival were eager to hear these melodies with their Inuktitut texts. So Karrie and Mark Turner, who coaches the Nain Brass Band, performed them as duets with the soprano line on trumpet and Karrie singing the tenor. This isn’t a traditional way of performing these hymns which are usually sung in four parts by Inuit congregations or choirs or played by brass bands alone. This recording is a way of bringing these two performance traditions together.

Denis Parker and the Modern Saints

Friday, November 21st, 2014

Denis Parker epitomizes the blues of “The Rock”! His influences and impact is paramount in our province. The Modern Saints consts of Noaks Mick Davis and Elliott Dicks on rhythm and John Clarke, as modest as he is skilled, on guitars. This tight combo are mean in their gritty, rock N’ roll blues swagger to form an alchemy with Parker (who has never sounded better). Great to hear him back on electric guitar.

Live off the floor in essence, smokin’ hot in spirit.
