Jerry Stamp – Rogue Doubt

Monday, November 3rd, 2014

St. John’s singer/songwriter Jerry Stamp delivers the most powerful and impressive album of his career. Think Father John Misty, Radiohead, Dave Matthews, Jeff Buckley, and Rufus Wainwright in a musical ball of twine. Jerry’s most dynamic qualities: amazing voice, romantic introspective lyrics and smack on instrumentation, are all peaking on Rogue Doubt. An esoteric and dextrous artist deserving of massive attention.

Gala – Young Hymns

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Hi guys. I’m Aley Waterman and this is a project I’ve been working on for a while. With the help of some talented musical friends, some of my little songs have been turned into these ethereal piano-driven tunes. Take a listen if you like!

Etymologically, GALA derives from the Old French word gale (merriment), and now connotes a sense of festive occasion. It’s also my favourite kind of apple.

For those of you who don’t know, Aley is in the local math-pop band Thee Internet. If that weren’t enough, the CD is produced by Tim Baker of Hey Rosetta! No guff!

Irish Descendants & The Navigators – A Celtic Christmas

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

“Many know that Irish Descendants front man Con O’Brien has a very talented younger brother, Arthur. Arthur’s band The Navigators have also been waving the Irish music flag high for years turning many a head, and getting many a foot stomping along the way. This Christmas album features both bands, the first time the two acts ever teamed up before – a team up that was so successful it left the rest of us wondering what took so long.”

Ennis – Fortunate Ones

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

The second release from Ennis adheres to the ladies strengths- strong, confident vocals and a balanced mix of mid-up tempo numbers and ballads. Along with several fine originals, check out the Russell Crowe/Alan Doyle track and the lovely Ron Hynes tune, Ivory Keys. The album also features stellar backing from Mark Murphy, Billy Sutton, Alan Doyle, Graham Wells and many more. The girls are highly regarded as a legendary Newfoundland act.

Duane Andrews and Dwayne Coté – The Empress

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

“The Empress” is the second offering from Duane and Dwayne. It finely accentuates the pure skill and undeniable chemistry of two of Atlantic Canada’s finest musicians. Fiddle and gypsy-jazz guitar are the featured instruments and we favourably compare Duane and Dwayne to the masters, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. Beautifully nuanced trading of solos and masterful instrumental interplay are signature on this album of original compositions, Newfoundland fiddle tunes and classic jazz standards. Andrews and Cote are both powerful soloists who are really coming into their own as a critically noteworthy pair.

Also present on this collection is traditional Newfoundland/bluegrass band; Tarahan’s spin on the Old Crow Medicine Show hit song, Wagon Wheel. This is a gem in the Homebrew collection. It may just be the best edition yet.

Repartee – Repartee

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Voted by readers of the Newfoundland Herald as the band to watch in 2011, Repartee have certainly lived up to the buzz that has been steadily building around them.

Since showcasing at the 2010 Music NL conference in Rocky Harbour, they have been garnering some significant critical notice. Completing their first Atlantic Canadian tour this fall furthered the buzz outside of Newfoundland. Their self-titled full-length debut sent them home with a stunning five MusicNL awards in 2012. This album runs the musical gamut: energetic, upbeat dance tunes and introspective, self-examining ballads.

At the core of all this is front-woman Meg Warren: an accomplished pianist and classically trained vocalist, Meg uses her schooling to create exciting and interesting arrangements accentuated by synth pop, driving guitars and infectious bass and drums.

This album is filled with all the elements that make for great pop music: radio friendly tunes with a thoughtfulness that will keep you hooked.

Rube & Rake – Leaving With Nothing

Monday, October 19th, 2020
On sale NOW! Fantastic new CD from Rube & Rake!
Rube & Rake raise the bar considerably on their second full-length offering.
The aptly titled, “Leaving With Nothing” fits snugly in the Canadian folk tradition laid out by Ian tyson and Gordon Lightfoot in the 1960’s and early 70’s and subsequently, Gene MacLellan, Bob Ruzicka and others in the latter decade.
The Lightfoot influence is evident from the opening track with its jaunty melody and drifter’s barroom rant.
“Lonesome Song” follows those steps, lyrically a ‘determined troubadour’s creed’.
By the time we’re introduced to the third number, “What Will”, a more poignant perspective of road and thoughts stretch out ahead, culminating with the whimsical realization that “there’s no use in knowing what’s down the line”.
“Fleeting Moment”, a Jakob Dylan/Wallflowers style track presents our hero struggling with a full gamut of emotions making it one of the highlights and centerpiece of the album. The song is all-consuming, the drum marches and a potent, dense organ pulls us along at a perfect pace.
This is nicely followed by “10-33”, a tune featuring some lovely lap steel accentuated by the singer’s thought process shifting and stirring on a ponderous journey sure to continue.
“Leaves Of Gold” glitters with delicacy and paints one of the album’s most reflective lyrics, also one of the top 2 or 3 songs and unique in its folksy-psychedelic heaviness, tailing off as confusion meets clarity.
A wistfulness carries the final third of this album suggesting the traveller-seeker is growing tired of harsh soul-searching and now yearns for rest but is wise enough to know “there’s still a lot of crying to do”.
There’s plenty of wonderful finger-pickin’ throughout this gem and stellar contributions from Maria Cherwick, who adds flavour and spice with her fiddle playing. Robbie Brett, Adam Hogan, Steve Maloney and a host of guests all make suitably empathetic contributions but close vocal harmony and succinct, well-honed verses are indeed the bold print message on Rube & Rake’s calling card. This is Folk-Rock done right.
(produced by Adam Hogan and engineered by Romesh Thavanathan)

Sean Panting – The Simple Machine

Monday, February 24th, 2020

The man was born to entertain. Sean made his recording debut in 1990 with his band, Joyful Noise and the cassette, ‘Babbling About Bob’ but it was as frontman for both DRIVE followed by THE PLANKS that Sean’s energy and creativity on the St. John’s live circuit exploded. His brilliant solo debut, “Lotus Land” revved up the new millennium when it debuted in August of 2000 and 4 more albums of original songs culminating with “Man Of The Year” in Dec. 2011 cemented his importance as a truly unique singer/songwriter respected, admired and quite simply adored here at home by fans and peers alike. As a solo performer he is dynamic and absolutely compelling. Whether you’ve seen him perform at pubs like The Ship or annually at the Feast Of Cohen or anywhere else along the road you know that his incredible energy and many and varied subjects in song are all-consuming. Lyrically, Sean is by and large a ‘stream-of- consciousness ‘ artist. He finds a place to start, goes where it leads, allows the light to shine wherever it does and stays out of the way. He seems to possess the uninhibited nature of a child as pertains to his subject/muse correlation; the thoughts churn and the line dictates. And his robust guitar stylings… sure you knows he can go.
I’ve often likened Sean’s work to that of Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, Louden Wainwright III, Randy Newman and Ray Davies (Kinks). One can also hear likely influences from Dog Meat Barbeque, Ramones and perhaps Pixies.

Mick Davis & Thin Love – Touch The Moon CD

Monday, February 19th, 2018

Holy crap!! The new Mick Davis & Thin Love album is the gear. Remarkably diverse and distinctive from Mick’s Novaks and recent solo work, “Touch The Moon” captures lightning in a bottle.

Mick is drawn to ‘feel’ players and his combo of Craig Follett and Barry Ledrew are spot on, accentuating Mick’s emotive lyrics and passionate vocal prowess. It’s all in the grooves.

We can’t think of anyone more emblematic of rock n’ roll in our province than Mick whose praises have been sung by Little Steven Van Zandt from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Andrew Loog Oldham, legendary Rolling Stones manager in the 1960’s. Mick was the recipient of MusicNL,s “Male Artist Of The Year’ for 2017.

Andrew LeDrew – Fair Winds

Wednesday, October 9th, 2013

Andrew LeDrew’s first CD in 8 years is a real gem. A cohesive album that plays like a good read of short stories many and varied.

‘Fair Winds’ opens with the jaunty ‘Red Skies’, a wistful traditional/pub style number spun with whistle and fiddle and an invitation to come aboard for the ride.

‘Moonlight Over Cupids’ is the prettiest song Andrew has ever written and containing plenty of substance to boot. Beautiful, simple images are painted in the lyrics. Mandolin and fiddle tilt and bend while the accordion carries the melody. Andrew must have felt a lovely calm upon completion of this song about chances, beginnings, and endings. One hears the influence of Ron Hynes’ tender side and classic Elton and Bernie circa 1971-1973. It would fit snugly on ‘Tumbleweed Connection’.

‘Northern Rose’ is a country&western character-sketch song featuring a breezy banjo part dancing midst a rhythmic pop melody.

‘Brookfield Road’ delves into territory mined well by Blue Rodeo, delivering soundly in that style.

‘Random Island’ smacks of the Celtic side of Bruce Springsteen. A storyteller in a pub holding his buddies court with a tragic, heartbreaking take of love, lost, and mortality.

‘Cuckold’s Cove’ reveals a sweet melody, spare production anchored by a lyrical fiddle track complete with a gorgeous chorus awash in accordion.

‘Portuguese Whalers and the Southside Brawlers’ gives us a musical work that sways whimsically in contrast to the lyrical content. Imagine Bernie Taupin lyrics dished out by Springsteen complete with E Street Band vocal stylings.

This 10 song album closes with a subtle anthem. ‘This City’s a Legend’ is a great bookend to the opening track. Andrew sings ‘It’s been burned, it’s been broken into. You can get yourself lost in the mist in a legend like this… or you can find your way back in the arms of this place’.

These songs are about places and folks, changes and pondering thoughts with eyes, ears, and mind wide open. Andrew has matured as a vocalist, substantially more confident and at ease in delivery and approach. Well Done.

Peter Narvaez, Sandy Morris, Glen Collins – Superpickers! Blues on the Ceiling

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

“Blues on the Ceiling” is a lesson in how to play the blues. It is unique and special in a number of ways. It blends some of the most revered blues tunes in the canon with clever and crafty originals and dares you to make the distinction between the two. Peter Narvaez is THAT good! His attention to authenticity is acute, his playing is masterful and the guests on his record are among St. John’s blues elite. Appearances by Sandy Morris, Glen Collins, Steve Hussey, Brad Power and Dave Rowe create an atmosphere and dynamic that serves to strengthen the truthfulness and honesty that has become synonymous with Peter’s work. These guys bleed the blues. For those who don’t know, it is Peter’s final recording and you can sense that he knew it would be his last. He sings with wisdom, clarity and understanding that comes when nearing the end of a life. He defiantly plays the meanest harmonica you’ll hear and picks some of the fastest, grooviest and meaningful guitar on any record regardless of genre. Peter was a pioneer in Newfoundland music and folklore. We are confident that his music will endure like the blues pioneers that preceded him.

Ennis – Lessons Learned

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

“Lessons Learned” is the first recording in the bands history to feature Maureen and Karen as a duo without the presence of Teresa. With Teresa pursuing a solo career, Karen, Maureen and long time collaborator, Mark Murphy, went into the studio with a mind to focus on the accentuation of two female vocalists as opposed to their traditional three part sound. At the forefront of the record is Maureen Ennis, a marvelous vocalist and guitar player; she also co-writes the majority of the Ennis material with Mark. Karen and Mark round out the vocal sound. The quality and precision of vocal blending has become a trademark aspect of the Ennis sound and it is certainly in fine form on “Lessons Learned”. Lyrically, themes of coming of age and having gained perspective through the living of ones life are prominent. A beautifully touching moment comes by way of the ballad, “I Will Sing You Home”, a glowing and hopeful tribute to a loved one who has passed on. The record is polished and clean and the performance is quite lovely. “Lessons Learned”
gained Ennis the 2011 East Coast Music Award for Roots/Traditional Recording of the Year.

Terry Penney – The Last Guitar

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Terry Penney’s modus operandi as a songwriter is one of poignant reflection on experiences resulting in lessons of lasting value and this has been his greatest strength. A storyteller at heart, this SOCAN/Music Newfoundland and Labrador Songwriter of the Year’s tales revolve around simpler times and the process that bear its fruits. “Shoal Harbour” is a wistful ditty, nostalgic without pandering to sentimentality, comparable to Ron Hynes best work in a similar vein. “I Have Offered” and “Shells” portray an often revisited theme by Terry; human conflict, quiet contemplation and feeling out of step with both, in the midst of some hovering need for reconciliation. This is a subject he addresses well. “Jesus Crisis” hints at a deeper issue without any direct lyrical reference. The subtlety is effective. Terry’s voice is that of your brother’s at a family gathering- pure, warm and honest. Craig Young handles co-production duties as well as quintessential contributions on guitar, mandolin and dobro resulting in Penney’s most country & western sounding record to date. The flickering mandolin on “I Have Offered” along with several lovely dobro bits on others works effectively, sympathetic to varying themes. Perhaps Terry Penny’s best album to date, certainly consistent and further evidence of his growth as one of Newfoundland’s finer singer/songwriters.

Wayne Muggridge – Come in and Jar the Door

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Wayne Muggridge is a master guitar player who blends Newfoundland traditional folk music and the country twang guitar stylings of Chet Atkins. It is a blend that works so well on this record. Traditional instruments such as the bouzouki, mandolin and button accordion are met with the smooth, warm tones of Wayne’s effortless old school country guitar. He plays an old Gretsch Country Gentleman and he truly makes it sing. This recording could be compared favourably to Sandy Morris’s now seminal recording, Music from Land and Sea. Lovers of finely crafted guitar chops and traditional folk music alike will be sure to enjoy this fantastic album. Check out “Solo for Mr, Gretsch”!

Frank Maher and the Mahers Bahers – Marvelous!

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Ask anyone in Newfoundland’s music community about Frank Maher and chances are they will tell you that he one of the finest musicians on the island. Frank has appeared as a session musician on more than forty recordings and has toured with The Plankerdown Band and Figgy Duff. Ironically, until now, Frank has never recorded an album of his own. On Mahervelous not only does Frank shine as the brilliant instrumentalist he is on tunes like Stirling Castle and The Super Jigs but he also brings a great sense of humour to O’Brien Is Dead and Frank Maher’s Famous Non-Rhyming Limerick. Frank is ably assisted on this recording by the Maher’s Bahers – Christina Smith; fiddle, Jean Hewson; guitar and Rick West; Bodhran. We affectionately call Frank the “Squeeze Box King”!

Great Big Sea – Road Rage

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Road Rage is the capturing of Great Big Sea’s now famous live show. All the explosive energy, the anthemic songs, their high-octane delivery and the frenzied crowd thrust into wild fits of overwhelming approval. Great Big Sea has made a career with their out-of-this-world live performance. Here it is with all your favourite songs!

Larry Foley – Free and Easy

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Larry Foley, sometimes front-man for the popular Newfoundland band, The Punters, presents his second solo release. This is a lovely offering of tunes that features Larry’s blend of traditional Newfoundland and country stylings. His voice is filled with experience and his vocals are honest and thoughtful.
The album is stripped down and acoustic, somewhat of a departure from the trad-rock/country of the Punters and its strength lies in Larry’s earnest delivery. “Free and Easy” features a wonderful cover of the Ron Hynes classic, Sonny’s Dream and a lovely version of Sweet Forget Me Not featuring Larry’s grandfather.
