Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers – Greatest Misses

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

Buddy Wasisname are Newfoundland musical and comedic legends. They have had a long and celebrated career as one of the most popular acts to ever emerge from the island. Their penchant for intensely humorous songs and sketches and equally poignant and touching ballads speaks to their intelligent and insightful perspectives on the social and cultural fabric of Newfoundland and Labrador. Their sound is traditional folk with elements of acoustic guitar, mandolin and particularly fine accordion playing coming from Ray Johnson. Greatest Misses is, ironically, a Greatest Hits compilation and is a cross-section of a career’s worth of wonderful material. To get a well-rounded and timeless perspective on Newfoundland life, this is the album to have.

Kelly McMichael – Waves

Tuesday, June 8th, 2021
Kelly McMichael’s, “WAVES” pulls you in upon its first crest. Thematically, “I Missed Out On Everything” is the ideal opener for an album that chronicles a personal journey. It oozes with a 1970’s pop-radio vibe, its lyric examining the present with an eye on the past, a cathartic process to kick off an intriguing and compelling set of songs. Wisdom is doing the right thing without a precedent and the lyrics softly allude to this assessment.
“Out The Window” addresses the concept of overcoming. Blissfully dolled up in an 80’s dance-synth sound and a celebratory mood, and we’re off to the races.
It’s the vibrant and lush “Stepping Stone” that reaches out and grabs the listener. A sure-fire hit single in the old-school manner(think Elton John, circa.1972) with a real beauty of a chorus. By this time we’re falling helplessly in love with Kelly’s voice; confident, soaring and emotionally balanced, she scores perfect on every mark.
“She Makes Men” is another one of the album’s stand-out numbers. An intriguing lyric; a somewhat poetic vignette adorned with a mellifluous melody (there’s that early 70’s Elton influence again).
“It Will Pass” features the disc’s most tender moment embellished by an elongated, dreamy and psychedelic outro that pulls and tugs your senses like a kite high in an open field.
“I Won’t Stop” unleashes some anger and disappointment while “Montreal” delivers a more reflective message with a seamless bridge following the second chorus and leading us out.
The album closes with a search for the remaining unanswered questions…or so it seems. Yet still, “Waves” bravely delves into issues the artist has struggled with, come to terms with, achieving a better sense of firm-footing and a summation of a period of doubt and uncertainty arriving at a better place. As themes, optimism and hope win out and Kelly’s expressive vocal prowess delivers big-time on this album.
The singer/songwriter is a unique breed of artist indeed. They craft poetic notes and conceive of potential melodies and then gather together sympathetic musicians to help fully realize their intention. Kelly McMichael has gathered her flock, most notably Jake Nicoll, wearer of many hats, Maria Peddle, Sarah Harris and Mara Pellerin.
Fans of Sheryl Crow, Sarah Harmer, Courtney Barnett, Brandi Carlisle and Lucinda Williams will enjoy.

Rawlins Cross – Rock Steady

Wednesday, December 13th, 2017

Rock Steady is the ninth studio project for Rawlins Cross and one of the most personal, with six original tracks being written by the band.

Rawlins Cross, one of Canada’s most accomplished and beloved Celtic bands, was formed in St. John’s in the late 1980s by songwriting brothers Dave Panting (guitar and mandolin) and Geoff Panting (keyboards and accordion) and Ian McKinnon (highland pipes and tin whistle). Since then, Rawlins Cross has been at the vanguard of the fusion of Celtic traditional music with the rhythms of rock, pop and worldbeat music. Equally at ease with a soulful Highland Air (MacPherson’s Lament) or a raucous party song (Colleen, Reel ‘n’ Roll, Rock Steady), Rawlins Cross never fails to electrify its faithful fans. Over its nearly 30 year run, Rawlins Cross has always been a “fan favourite” on the North American and European concert and festival circuits.

Rosemary Lawton – Painted Glass

Friday, December 1st, 2017

The auspicious debut on CD for Rosemary Lawton. From St. John’s, fiddler/vocalist/ songwriter delights with an offering both rootsy and sophisticated featuring two originals and tasty pieces written by Emile Benoit and Dave Panting.
The arrangement on track two is an artistic and sonic pleasure while Rosemary’s vocal on “The Siren” is courageous and arresting.
Stellar accompaniment is provided by Carole Bestvater, Maria Cherwick, Adam Press, Jason Whelan and Billy Sutton throughout. Astutely produced by Ian Foster. I strongly suggest indulging in this superb listen.

Michelle Noftall – Roots In The Water

Saturday, November 25th, 2017

Michelle Noftall stepped onto the local music stage in 2015 with her debut album, “Songs for a Winter Night”, which earned her a MusicNL nomination of Female Artist of the Year.

Michelle’s singing style has been compared to the likes of Karen Carpenter and Joni Mitchell, and her warm, rich vocals are a unique sound that can be attributed to both her classical formal training (as an alumni of MUN School of Music) and her love of folk and country music.
“Roots in the Water” is her latest release. Inspired by her fascinating family tree, it is a concept album of music that will carry the listener on a musical journey from Barbados to Newfoundland, with stories and songs of love and loss that is sure to touch the hearts of listeners and prove to be a worthy addition to our province’s folk music collection.

Kim Stockwood – Sometimes the Moon (with Bill King)

Friday, October 20th, 2017

When Kim Stockwood met with jazz great, Bill King, in 2016, she had already sifted through dozens of old standards and had a handful of songs she wanted to explore with him. As the pair spent time together, Kim’s vision for a record of standards developed, yet she still struggled with a couple of songs. Songs that weren’t standards that she felt should be. Songs that she wanted to sing and that she wanted the world to hear.

With the passing of her mentor, Ron Hynes, Kim decided that she must take the plunge, and she recorded Ron’s “Sometimes The Moon”. Kim’s relationship with Ron began when she first started singing in St. John’s in the early ‘90’s. Out of the blue, Ron called her and invited her to demo the song. It was a memorable moment for the new singer. She’d never met Ron but she was already in awe of his talent. It was the beginning of a long and close friendship. Ron never released “Sometimes the Moon” but Kim and Ron often performed it together. On one of these occasions, it was recorded live. Ron’s resulting guitar track anchors the new recording, allowing them to perform it one last time together. Kim’s desire to do Ron’s song justice compelled her to ask Ben Mink to play violin on the song and the result is a stunning version of “Sometimes The Moon” that Ron would be proud of.

Peter G. Noel – In Case We Forget

Monday, September 18th, 2017

Peter is an active songwriter and has just released his first album, “In Case We Forget”. The album includes eight original songs about remembrance, love, heartbreak and hope.

Larry Foley – Come Along With Me Bys

Monday, July 3rd, 2017

After almost twenty years of writing, recording, producing music and fronting such bands as The Punters and The 8 Track Favourites Larry Foley has emerged to put his stamp on a body of work which is quickly establishing him as a solo performer. “Come Along With Me Bys” a new compilation is a reflection of his roots and his love of a good song. The album features a new song “Boats To Build” as well as many Newfoundland standards. Included on this CD are 3 songs from the pen of Ron Hynes “Sonny’s Dream”, “St. John’s Waltz” & “Back Home On The Island” Ron was a good friend of Larry, and his rendition of these songs would make Ron proud. The vast majority of these songs are very well known in Newfoundland, such as “Signal Hill”, “Newfoundland Blessing”, “Fisherman’s Boy”, “Fiddler’s Green” & “A Couple More Years”. “Gulf Of Mexico” a Steve Earle song describes the perils of drilling in the ocean for oil, as we saw in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and is poignant to Newfoundland as we have oil drilling in the ocean off Newfoundland. “Ramblin’ Boy” is a tribute to Larry’s friend Dermot O’Reilly of the band “Ryan’s Fancy” who unfortunately passed away way too early.

Saturday, November 16th, 2013

This is his first release since his 2007 studio album ‘Wander Songs’, both albums are reminiscent of each other, excluding the large number of musical instruments that have been introduced on this recent release ‘It Takes All kinds…’. This album is a nice mix of slow, reflective, somber songs as well as a few upbeat compositions to lighten the mood. He’s thought provoking, upsetting, and uplifting with his perfected lyrics which he pairs with a folk-rock style and beautiful musical arrangements of strings, pianos, drums, etc…

Art Stoyles – Accordion Christmas

Friday, November 9th, 2012

“Tidings of comfort and joy… it is perhaps this phrase that best celebrates the festive season.  Comfort & joy have always been a part of Art Stoyles life and being.  He is not a complicated man, rather he is all heart, a warm soul and a generous personality.  Through decades of playing he has evolved an accordion style like no other… a European feel though deeply rooted in the far east of the western world.  Newfoundland is Art’s home and there’s probably no better place in the world to spend Christmas than on the craggy shores of this island in the North Atlantic.  Peace.  Goodwill to you and yours.  I hope you enjoy this music and much as we enjoy Art.”

– Ray Penton Jr. (Liner Notes)

Darrell Cooper – Foundation
