Heather Bambrick – It’s About Time

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Heather Bambrick is making big waves on the local jazz scene. A cross between Diana Krall and Janis Siegal this album features superb vocals and dynamite arrangements. Hugely popular.

Chris Andrews – By the Hush

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Chris is best known to locals as the big voiced singer from Shanneyganock. One thing’s for sure – if you set out to record a CD in Newfoundland, you can always count on a wealth of talented musicians to pitch in – too many to print here. On this recording Chris delivers a great recording in the vein of Stan Rogers and Christy Moore.

8 Track Favourites – One Track Mind

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

The 8 Track Favourites, who have been together for the last two years, have had a major buzz around them. Wherever they play, they are playing to packed houses.
The 8 Track Favourites is a ‘supergroup’ made up of some of the finest musicians in Newfoundland today. The band includes Larry Foley and Patrick Moran (The Punters), Chris LeDrew (Brothers In Stereo), Sandy Morris, Barry Hillier and George Morgan.
The 8 Track Favourites cover the old time country hits in their own style and dress on stage in hats and country attire reminiscent of the style of the older country performers.
Walking away from a performance of the 8 Track Favourites you will feel thoroughly satisfied. Surprisingly, the audience is somewhat younger than you would think with many in the audience not having been born when these songs were hits, but nevertheless, younger fans have embraced and sing along to all the hits.
“One Track Mind” is a live recording which captures the band at their best and helps you relive the experience of their shows.
HE..HAW!!

Baytown – Two Places

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

“Two Places” is the debut release of one of our city’s most popular pop rock acts. Baytown is a three piece combo that offers up catchy and danceable rock. The listener will find elements of blues, reggae, funk and rock throughout the album. Lead singer and principal songwriter, Matthew Cooke is a talented guitar player whose slightly dirty toned riffs give the tunes an edgy feel. He’s got a smooth but strong voice and his sense of a great pop hook is evident on a number of the tracks. Anchored by a strong and steady rhythm section the songs on this debut are fun, light and groovy. This is a fantastic road trip album. Drive to a beach on a sunny day and give this record a spin. It’s a good one!

Heartbroken – Tonight Tonight

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

After having achieved great success as a solo artist and as one third of the critically acclaimed folk pop group Shaye, Damhnait Doyle has embarked on a new project as front woman for The Heartbroken. The group’s debut finds Damhnait in fine vocal form. Her voice, arguably one Atlantic Canada’s finest, is her greatest musical tool. She displays incredible tonal control and her versatility as a singer provides her with an incredible ability to emote sincerely whether through her powerfully sustained higher register or with a mild and earnest whisper. An interesting element to the recording, vocally, is the addition of a prominent male vocal that really adds a warmth and cushion of Damhnait’s. She is backed by an impressive band that serves to heighten the power and beauty of her vocal. The record is steeped in folk pop and contains elements of rock and country. It runs the gamut of dynamic and tempo, from quiet, stripped down acoustic lullaby to upbeat, driving rock song. Ultimately, the songs are catchy, and performed with awareness that the bands true musical asset is Dav’s voice. The arrangements and instrumentation are sympathetic to this fact and the finished product is a fun, light and accessible of radio-friendly folk-rock.

Joe Belly – Nickles and Dimes

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

2010 Music NL award-winning record, “Nickles and Dimes” is Joe Belly’s 2nd album to take the honour of best country recording. He also won in 2008 for “Crawlin’ Out a Hole”. It is a wandering, light and easy flowing album of country and folk songs. It congures images of long walks through the praries under a completely clear, star-filled sky. Acoustic and stripped down with the exception of the Neil Young, Gretsch White Falcon sounding, Sundays at the Regal Theatre, it is an album of tunes that could be best served sitting around a campfire. Joe’s voice is charmingly earnest. It is, at times, shaky and fragile but always complimentary to the style and delivery of the songs. The tunes on the album hearken back to style of old cowboy themed songs of the late 19th century. Often cattle herders would sing calming songs to keep their herds at ease throughout the night thus reducing the likelihood of a stampede. Joe’s songs are cut from this type of cloth; very soothing, and gently delivered. Whether you’re winding down for the night or having your first coffee of the day, this is a pretty record to spin to put you in that relaxed state. It is well-deserving of its critical success.

Duane Andrews & Dwayne Cote – Dwayne Cote & Duane Andrews

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Winner of the 2011 East Coast Music Award for Best Jazz Recording, this album is absolutely phenomenal. It is an interesting piece in that for the first time, it pairs two of Atlantic Canada’s finest jazz musicians, Duane Andrews and Dwayne Cote. Andrews hails from Newfoundland and Cote from Cape Breton. These two backgrounds, steeped in traditional music drawn from their respective regions and the heavy influence of gypsy jazz music make for an exciting merger. This traditional influence is also blended with Duane and Dwayne’s expertise in the genre of jazz music. These exquisite recording features solely fiddle (Cote) and guitar (Andrews) that is immediately comparable to that of masters, Stephane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt. The chemistry between players and the fusion of sound between the two instruments is incredible. The interplay and exchange is highly emotive, at times rousing, at others heartbreaking but always superb. Both Cote and Andrews are highly accomplished and critically revered musicians in the genre and the coming together of such monster musicians is both rare and a treat. This is a one of a kind record in Atlantic Canada and is a must have, cornerstone of any jazz collection.

Novaks – Things Fall Apart

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

After a highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning debut, The Novaks took two years to record their follow up. The band went from a four piece to three with the departure of lead guitarist, Chuck Tucker and getting time to record proved difficult. Finally, they got into the studio and recorded “Things Fall Apart” in a little over a week at the Sonic Temple in Halifax. The record was recorded live off the floor and is certainly the most raw and nothing to lose sounding album of the two. As a three piece, lead singer, Mick Davis is given an opportunity to stretch his legs and take over lead guitar duties. This new sound relies more on the space between instruments which Davis fills with well-timed, melodic feedback and drawn out, dirty solos. The absence of the additional guitar is not missed and new fans of the Novaks will be impressed with Mick’s tasteful and hard-nosed guitar chops. The rhythm section is as hard-edged as the guitars with Mark Neary on bass and Elliot Dicks on drums. The poppy, jangle of the first record has been replaced with a rougher, riff-heavy sound that is reminiscent of the Canadian rock being made in the 1990’s. Mick’s vocal, as strong and commanding as ever, is reminiscent of Tom Petty and, at times, Dylan circa Highway 61. The band sounds tighter and more unified on this record. Lyrically, Davis is at the top of his game, often dealing with the frustrations of following such a successful debut, living up to critical expectations and going through significant life and inter-band changes. Musically, the band takes a more adventurous and sparse approach to the arrangements again, creating space and more of a dynamic ebb and flow. Where they wanted to get everything out and onto tape on the first record they now sound more patient and sure of themselves. They have grown as a band and the album reflects that growth. If there was any doubt about their ability as a three piece band, it was extinguished with “Things Fall Apart”.

Ian Foster – Room in the City

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Ian’s second album, “Room in the City” was released in 2008 and immediately marked a significant growth in his abilities both as a songwriter and musician. Our store manager, Tony Ploughman says, “Ian is imagistic and reflective to the point of examination, a romantic indeed. But his growth as a writer has birthed degrees of poignancy. His use of metaphor is astute, a ponderous writer whose curiosity produces realizations smattered with whimsy and emotional yearnings. In the face of loss, a significant theme, he is part pensive and part philosophical. Indeed, Foster is very perceptive and there is much sober soul-searching upon which his poetic lyrics are unveiled. But when circumstances appear dire, an injection of optimism pours forth. Some songs are like inspired eulogies”. “Room in the City” set a new high water mark in Ian’s career and went on to receive multiple Music Newfoundland and Labrador Award nominations and an East Coast Music Award nomination for Pop Recording of the Year.

Ian Foster – We Begin Here

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Released in 2009, Ian’s third record is musically stripped down relative to his previous record, “Room in the City”. A multi-instrumentalist, Ian chose to play the majority of instruments present on the album with the exception of cello, performed by Adam Press. This slightly more sparse approach allows for the strength of his lyricism and narrative to be highlighted in a more open and sonically freeing way. The album has a notably acoustic feel with elements of folk, blues, Americana and pop interwoven throughout. For those who appreciate, embrace and applaud artistic quality, commitment, drive, and the fruits of a laborious creative process, Ian Foster is reason to take notice.

Mercy the Sexton – Say It Back

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Founded by brothers Luke and Duncan Major in 2008, Mercy, the Sexton has emerged as one of the city’s most popular bands. “Say it Back” is a driving, infectious, danceable rock offering filled with great hooks and radio-friendly indie-pop tunes. Lead singer and primary songwriter, Luke Major delivers an energetic and youthful vocal with an urgency in his voice that is accentuated by driving guitars, synthesizers and the backing vocals of Jessie Power and Geraldine Hollett (The Once). Zach Goudie of CBC once said, “Mercy, the Sexton sound the way a great Friday night feels”. We agree. This is some of the province’s finest pop music by one of it’s favourite bands.

Karla Pilgrim – I’ll Think of You

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Karla’s debut solo record garnered her Country Artist of the Year honours at the 2009 Music Newfoundland and Labrador Awards and gained her a 2010 East Coast Music Award Nomination for Country Recording of the Year. It was a powerful debut that exhibited Karla’s substantial vocal prowess and confidence as a solo performer. She is backed by an impressive band that includes Newfoundland heavyweights, Paul “Boomer” Stamp, Paul Kinsman, Sandy Morris, Craig Young and Chris Ledrew. The band offers up a fine dose of expertly performed down home country tunes. A mix of danceable country-rock plays nicely against heartfelt ballads, both of which Karla masters effortlessly. She has a very broad vocal range and the acrobatics she exhibits are definitely a strong point on the album. She is a thoughtful singer, holding back when necessary and launching into confident barn burning moments when called upon to do so. She is also a gifted acoustic guitar player exhibiting rock steady rhythm guitar that chugs confidently along throughout the ballads and rockers. “I’ll Think of You” is a modern country record, slick and well-produced with some elemental throwbacks to the classic country that has influenced Karla from an early age. It is a confident, feel good debut and is an excellent example of new Newfoundland country music.

Beauwater – Movin’ On

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Formed in 2008, Beauwater have proven themselves to be a no frills, straight-ahead, powerful rock band. Their debut, “Movin’ On” received multiple Music Newfoundland and Labrador Music Awards at the 2011 conference in St. John’s including Rising Star, Album of the Year and Alternative Artist/Group of the Year. They blur the lines of heavy, riff rock and rhythm and blues to create a gritty, groove-laden sound that has gained them a devoted following in the city. Lead singer/guitarist Jonathan Reid is a skilled guitarist and a self-assured vocalist and that confidence is amplified by the strength of bandmates Curtis Harding (keys, bass, vocals), Greg Newhook (bass, guitar, vocals) and Michael Maddox (drums, vocals). This is a formidable debut and a unique, in-your-face rock and roll record on Newfoundland’s musical map.

Matthew Hare – This Time Last Year

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Released in January of 2012, “This Time Last Year” is a reflective, self-analyzing and contemplative record filled with thoughtful and honestly delivered lyrics of moving past the fallout of dissolved relationships and moving forward as an individual through the hurt of holding on to something no longer yours to hold. Stark and beautifully straightforward arrangements heighten the sense of longing present in many of the narratives. The album, produced by local St. John’s musicians, Jerry Stamp and Ian Foster, is acoustic based with flares of piano and electric guitar, providing a quietly beautiful colour and tone to the songs. The musical arrangements are anchored to Hare’s conviction as a vocalist and storyteller and attempt to capture the energy and magnetism of his live shows. There is a lovely sense of space in the songs that serves to elevate the emotion and conviction in Matthew’s voice. This is exceptionally accessible music, catchy and memorable and above all, heartfelt and sincere.

Jim Payne and Fergus O’Byrne – A Lovely Time of Year

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Absolute Newfoundland musical icons, Jim Payne and Fergus O’Byrne have been performing, writing and recording music together for many years. Jim is highly regarded as one of the province’s finest songwriters and Fergus is synonymous with helping to popularize the Irish and Newfoundland musical connections as one third of the legendary group, Ryan’s Fancy. This record is the duo’s first foray into the realm of Holiday music and it is a lovely tribute to the season. As one might expect, the performance on the album is fantastic. Both musicians are accomplished at their respective instruments and have found an authentic synergy that really brings these tunes to life. Acoustic guitar, banjo, accordion and concertina make up the core sound giving the record the traditional folk sound that Jim and Fergus have become well known for. As with previous releases, one of the true strengths of the duo is the power, conviction and wonderful blending of these two timeless voices. Whether singing a familiar holiday standard or a Jim Payne original, the voices rise, rousing and proud. This album was wildly popular during its first holiday season and it is sure to become a Newfoundland holiday classic

Chris Kirby – Wonderizer

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Chris Kirby proves again why he is at the top of the rhythm and blues game in Newfoundland. “Wonderizer”, Kirby’s fourth release is a tasty offering of highly infectious, groove-laden soul music that is jammed with skillfully played electric piano, tasteful guitar, a rock solid rhythm section and blistering horn arrangements. Possessing a strong lyrical wit, Kirby splits the album in to two halves: Greasy and Honey. The Greasy side of the record deals with shadier aspects of a musician’s lifestyle. From back door drug pushers to slick, smooth talking posers. It is a dark and ultimately humorous look at the dichotomy of bar culture from the eyes of a seasoned musician. The honey side has a more positive slant and deals with love, the positive elements of relationships and the silver lining of the first half of the album. On “Wonderizer”, Chris is highlighting his chops as an electric piano player. He is fantastic and the piano is a sonic extension of his hands. He floats effortlessly up and down the keyboard with subtlety and nuance and at once smashes the keys in a fiery and raunchy flourish of Rhodes(y) goodness harkening glimpses of Dr. John. He is seriously soulful and this is accentuated by his tried and true rhythm section, Craig Follett on bass and Mark Marshall on drums and percussion. Filling out the sound is one of the province’s finest guitarists, Chad Murphy and the gut busting, “Horns of Justice”, including members of Reggae/Ska darlings, the Idlers. This potent combination creates an intensely catchy record filled with great hooks and a whole lot of soul.

Pamela Morgan – Ancestral Songs

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Purists Rejoice!! A collection of vintage songs from the oral tradition of Newfoundland and Labrador. Accompanying herself on guitar, Pamela Morgan presents a disc of stunning beauty. Her beguiling voice and the contribution from violinist/violist Chris Leslie communicate the simplicity of these folk songs perfectly. The liner notes add nicely to the attractiveness of this package.

Duane Andrews – Raindrops

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

Duane Andrews is one of Canada’s most exciting and gifted musicians. Fusing the traditional music of Newfoundland with gypsy jazz styling, Duane has created a hybrid of the two genres effectively creating a new style of traditional jazz that has gained him serious national and international praise, both popularly and critically. He has gained numerous awards for his outstanding body of work including the 2011 Independent Music award for Instrumental Album, the 2011 East Coast music Award for Instrumental Album of the Year, the 2010 Music NL and Music Nova Scotia Award for Best Instrumental and jazz album respectively, 4 2008 Music NL awards including Best Album, Male Artist of the Year and SOCAN Songwriter of the Year and a whole host of nominations from the East Coast Music Association, Independent Music Awards, USA Songwriting Competition and the Canadian Folk Music Awards. His highly acclaimed third release, Raindrops, highlights Duane’s strengths as a producer and arranger. He thickens and builds upon the sound on the record significantly by marrying the gusto and nuance of his go to band, Steve Hussey on unwavering rhythm guitar, Patrick Boyle with his sublime and effortless trumpet, Dave Rowe on upright bass and Bill Brennan on vibes with the beauty and elegance of the Atlantic String Quartet. The result is a stunning union of world class musicians from two differing musical backgrounds. Five of the album tracks are original compositions of Duane’s and they are seamlessly intermingled with classics by Django Reinhardt, Charles Mingus and two legendary Newfoundland fiddlers, Rufus Guinchard and Emile Benoit. A seemingly odd pairing of tunes is, here, perfectly matched and meticulously arranged to the near point of perfection. The quartet elevates an already impressive sound with beautifully expressive string arrangements and the core band is firing on all cylinders. The music is joyful, animated and lyrical. Duane is an accomplished guitarist and the interplay between he and Pat Boyle (Trumpet) is the strength at the epicenter of the tunes. Raindrops serves to expose Duane as a vital and visionary musician on an international level. He has, in a relatively short time he has proven to be one of our most important and creative musical exports. Raindrops is a must have for traditional, folk and jazz fans alike. Django would most definitely approve.

Anita Best – Crosshanded

Friday, June 15th, 2012

The twelve ”unaccompanied” songs Anita Best sings on this album have kept company with generations of Newfoundland singers to whom they belong. They are accompanied thanks to producer Pamela Morgan, by a profound and welcome silence. Crosshanded is the first Amber Music CD of old-time Newfoundland songs sung a cappella by a Newfoundland singer. It is a beautiful tribute to the many singers who have helped to sustain the important and vibrant oral tradition throughout generations of Newfoundland culture. Anita is one of Newfoundland’s most fierce advocates and her devotion was met with the honouring of the Order of Canada.

Duane Andrews – Crocus

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club Quintette mesmerize the house with a heretofore-unknown style of music. The virtuoso guitar playing enchanting the audience and setting the stage for a Gypsy style that would change the face of Jazz and the perceptions of the instrument. Duane Andrews is the continuation of that wave. Crocus is our best seller of Duane’s and his effortless playing and keen sense of arrangement provide a Reinhardt inspired mélange of Jazz, Folk and original music.

Ennis Sisters – Red is the Rose

Friday, June 8th, 2012

Red is the Rose marked the debut for this incredibly talented trio of sisters. Known for their shimmering, flawless, three-part harmony, and traditional/folk-pop fusion, the Ennis girls would go on to win multiple East Coast Music awards and a Juno award for best country recording in 2002. Anchored by the reflective and image-laden writing of eldest sister, Maureen, the Ennis Sisters have carved out their permanent place in Newfoundland’s famed musical history and this was the album that started it all.

Long Distance Runners – Long Distance Runners EP

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Perhaps one of the more adventurous rock bands on the island, Long Distance Runners really stretch their legs both instrumentally and vocally on their debut EP. Nominated for five Music Newfoundland and Labrador awards at the 2011 conference, the album is ripe with catchy and unforgettable guitar work and beautifully lush and at times eerie vocal arrangements.

Favourable comparisons could be made to some of the later records made by The Beatles or early Rolling Stones. There is a timeless rock and roll feel to the record that makes the waiting for the full length album hard to bear. Get in the car and tune it up loud: speeding tickets are sure to follow.

Mark Bragg – Your Kiss

Monday, February 20th, 2012

From the first note of Mark Bragg’s newest “sacrifice” you get the feeling that you’re in for a wild ride. Mark has noted in interviews that he

“feels like a fiction writer, akin to Stephen King or any horror movie-making types”.

This gives him creative license to put his characters in situations that would put the regular Joe in jail and their kids in protective services. His songs are often nightmarish and dark but maintain a humour and oddly jovial quality that have become his trademark. There is truly a theatrical, circus-like feel to the record, as though Bragg were the devil’s own ringleader. These twisted stories are amplified by some of St. John’s finest musicians who offer up a heavy helping of gritty, dirt-filled rock and roll. You hear Springsteen, Nick Cave and Tom Waits but the sound is one all it’s own.

Beep Bop! – A Beep Bop Christmas

Rum Ragged – All The Bells And Wassails

Monday, December 15th, 2025
Rum Ragged’s All The Bells and Wassails : A Seasonal Offering Rooted in Tradition

On November 28, 2025, Rum Ragged will release their long-anticipated holiday album, All The Bells and Wassails via LHM Records. True to the band’s reputation, this collection is more than seasonal entertainment—it is a cultural document, grounding the holiday spirit in Newfoundland and Labrador’s centuries-old traditions of song, storytelling, and community.
Rather than adopting the gloss of a conventional Christmas record, Rum Ragged reach back into the seasonal customs of the North Atlantic. The album takes its name from the centuries-old practice of wassailing—an act of gathering, singing, and sharing drink to foster goodwill through the darkest days of the year.
The group’s interpretations draw on carols and melodies that travelled across oceans with immigrants to Newfoundland and Labrador, reshaped over generations in outport kitchens and parish halls.

The arrangements are at once meticulous and authentic. Fiddle, bouzouki, and bodhrán echo the instrumentation of festive gatherings past, while the band’s layered harmonies evoke the communal quality of neighbours lifting their voices together. This is music that captures the continuity of cultural memory—seasonal songs as they were carried forward, lived, and celebrated.
Yet the album is not bound by nostalgia alone. Rum Ragged infuses each track with vitality, underscoring how tradition remains alive and dynamic. There is reverence, but also the joy of performance: the energy of a band deeply embedded in their heritage, translating it for audiences both at home and abroad.

All The Bells and Wassails is not simply a holiday soundtrack. It is a reflection of how music sustains community, offering light, warmth, and continuity across generations. In sharing these songs, Rum Ragged reminds us that the holidays are as much about cultural inheritance as celebration—voices carried forward, bells ringing through time.

Rube & Rake – Good Time After Bad

Wednesday, May 14th, 2025

“Rube & Rake is a genuine meeting of East Coast and West Coast minds. The original songs of Josh Sandu of Prince George, British Columbia, and Andrew Laite of St. John’s, Newfoundland, bring to life a 21st century Canadian experience, unconfined by a single region or musical style.

The Rube & Rake sound elides an empathetic vocalistic rapport with thoughtful, sometimes playful, acoustic guitar and banjo stylings. Their tender melodies and tight vocals evoke a sense of keen listening, both to the world around them and to each other. Supported at times by bass, fiddle, and electric instruments, the graceful conviction of their vocals and the sensitive surety of their instruments are enriched by the counterpoint energy of dense harmonies, expansive soundscapes and steady rhythms.

The duo’s mosaic of influences, both musically and lyrically, draw on their personal experiences and their individual family histories. Their introspective lyrics reflect on the nature of home, the passage of time, and the spaces where aspiration and obligation intersect. In turns ballads, poems, and stories, their songs take the listener on journeys of exploration, both of the self and into the lives of others.

The Rube & Rake live performance combines musical precision and sensitive vocals with the pair’s approachable personas. Thoughtful songs, a subtle rhythmic energy, and an easygoing humour all contribute to an intimate, engaging experience for the listener. Their vulnerability and spirit of openness connect with audiences in small salon performances and larger venues alike.

The duo began performing together in 2013 and self-produced their debut album, Back and Forth, in 2017. On Leaving With Nothing, released in 2020, the pair explored a more extensive breadth of instrumental sounds while remaining true to their vocal subtlety and lyrical vulnerability. This sophomore album was recognized as SOCAN Songwriter of the Year at the 2022 East Coast Music Awards.

With the 2025 release of their third album, Good Time After Bad, Rube & Rake find themselves in a more mature place, both in life and as musicians. A more eloquently responsive acoustic guitar complements lyrics that examine the spaces between duty and desire, choice and circumstance, optimism and vulnerability.

Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Rube & Rake tour extensively across Canada and beyond, performing in both intimate settings and large venues.” – LHM Records

Mark Bragg – Ashes EP CD

Friday, January 17th, 2025

“Mark Bragg doesn’t need much of an introduction in his home town of St. John’s, Newfoundland, where he’s as much a music establishment himself as say, Fred’s Records or The Ship Pub. His Newfoundland fanbase has been long drawn to the tragic-hero protagonists he sings about, and the wild-eyed persona that takes the stage to sing them, and his latest recording is no different.   Mark’s new EP Ashes is six songs that “describe a post-apocalyptic world in which the traditional concept of love no longer exists.”  – mavensmusic.ca

Tim Baker – Full Rainbow of Light

Monday, December 2nd, 2024

Juno Award nominated, Polaris Prize short-listed, ECMA-laden musician Tim Baker returns with a new album, Full Rainbow of Light. The record consists of twelve new songs, written by Tim – except for one blistering cover of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” – and recorded in his hometown of St. John’s, Newfoundland. To call it a Christmas album is to cheapen the depth of the songwriting – these are masterful, original compositions that are set in the big feelings and high emotions of the holidays.

Inspiration for this album stems largely from Tim’s connection to Newfoundland and the unique and deep way December hits there each year. In Tim’s own words, “Full Rainbow of Light is the first record I’ve made that really centers around a single concept throughout: the warmth, the nostalgia and the goodness of being home at Christmas. Through many themes and stories and sounds, these songs keep pointing back there, to my people and places and past, in Newfoundland & Labrador – to all the tradition and the change of it, the warmth and the winter, the hardship and the hope of it.

This album is the follow-up to 2022’s The Festival and its 2023 companion EP Along the Mountain Road. Those releases sent Tim on extensive international touring, both with his full band, All Hands, and as a solo artist, selling out some of Canada’s most acclaimed venues, including Massey Hall in Toronto. In many ways, Full Rainbow of Light is a bridge between his long love of expansive full-band energy, and the vulnerability, purity and maturity of his recent solo performances. While there is an obvious specificity to the album – set as it is at Christmas, in Tim’s own home and history, complete with traditional Newfoundland instrumentation strewn throughout – the authenticity of the work is something that transcends the specific and shines a warm welcoming light for everyone, everywhere.

Andrew McCarthy Quintet – Day Late, Dollar Short

Tuesday, January 5th, 2021

Many of you know Andrew McCarthy from his time in OUROBOROS drumming up a feast behind all those sax/clarinet players. Or perhaps his fantastic contribution to the Feast Of Cohen event a year ago. His new offering as time keeper and manipulator of this quintet is a shining example of present day jazz seeped in classic 60’s Bluenote and CBS style sound. We highly recommend it.

Kathy Stock – Overcome

Wednesday, September 9th, 2020

Kathy Stock is a singer/songwriter and solo performing artist in St. John’s, Newfoundland. She grew up in a musical family and began playing and singing professionally while living in Tallahassee, Florida in 2008, where she was the featured entertainer at Giorgio’s Piano Bar. Since returning to Newfoundland in 2011, she has been the musical guest for TEDxStjohns, opened for NY Times Best Selling author and public speaker, Gabrielle Bernstein, written songs/jingles for the Town of Torbay, The Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games and Mary Brown’s Restaurant. Kathy’s career was temporarily interrupted by a bout of cancer in 2013, when she was just 29 years old, but she returned to music at the end of cancer treatment and has since been cancer free. She has become an advocate for young adult cancer care and research, across Canada, and regularly works with Young Adult Cancer Canada (YACC). Kathy’s first single, “Time” was released in April, 2019 and was quickly followed by the release of her 10-track solo debut album, “Overcome”.

Dave Mundy & Callum Latta – Make Me Down

Tuesday, August 25th, 2020

Very impressed with this new offering from Dave Mundy Music & Callum Latta, “Make Me Down”, a sweet collection of acoustic blues, country-blues and gospel-blues. Hats of to Darrell Power (production) for proper sensibilities for the genre and Jason Whelan for mixing and mastering exquisitely. There sure is and has been for 50 years plenty of fine blues albums from our province. Add this gem to your collection. Available right here at Fred’s now.

Ol Billy Bob Boy – Sweltering Sun

Friday, August 7th, 2020

Ol Billy Bob Boy dropped by with his brand new CD, “Sweltering Sun”. Featuring all originals, self-produced and with the help of a fine cast, Bill Simms serves up a strong mix of C&W/Folk infused numbers, some cheeky-humorous, some back-porch casual and some truly poignant. “Darlin You Look Great” could almost pass as a John Prine and female guest duet while “Snow Angel” has a Fred Eaglesmith vibe and “Carrie Ann” a touch of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. But it’s “Your Wife Said You were Gone” that jumps as the sheer beauty on this very charming and delightful debut.
For fans of John Prine, Jim Stafford, Louden Wainwright III and Roger Miller. Thanks for supporting our artists.

Nick Earle & the Reckless Hearts – S/T

Tuesday, July 14th, 2020

Congratulations Atlantic String Quartet on their new release, on sale now at Fred’s! It is a lovely CD of pre-World War 1 string quartet music by 2 young composers. The English pastoralism of Arthur Bliss and the finesse of French master Maurice Ravel share a connected sound-world.

It’s an enchanting combination by our very own Atlantic String Quartet, of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. Well done Heather Kao, Nancy Case-Oates, Kate Read, & Theo Weber.
