Terry Penney – Once Upon a Blue Moon: A 1950’s Tribute

Sunday, August 17th, 2014

Terry Penney is a young veteran singer/songwriter with six albums to his credit over a period of fourteen years. Number seven is lucky for his fans; a respectful tribute to some of the greats of the 1950’s- rock n’ roll’s iconic pioneers.

Terry’s appreciation of these songs and this significant capsule of time is felt throughout “Once Upon A Blue Moon”, his own original work reflective of classic melodic pop, rock and country over his career. He especially shines on the tender numbers but brings a suitable swagger to a handful of up-tempo gems.

Not surprisingly and without doubt a mirror of Terry’s own soul is revealed and celebrated in the aesthetic of his covers of choice in this sweet homage to a magical time in pop music history.

Also, check out his recent anthology, “Back Then”.

Dust Radio – A Broken Heart or the Break of Day

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

Dust Radio is a veteran rock/roots band led by St. John’s native David Guy, it’s principle song writer and lead vocalist. Guy provided the guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and accordion parts for the seasoned bar band who will remind listeners of early ‘Blue Rodeo’ and the ‘Sadies’. The vocal harmonies strike up fond memories of classic ‘Buffalo Tom’, and Chrys Hogan delivers a sympathetic vocal on the bittersweet duet, ‘Every River’, a Kim Richey cover.

Scott W. Goudie – Renata

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

“Newfoundland musician and visual artist Scott Goudie has played guitar since the mid-60s when he took an interest in blues and jazz.  While studying fine art in Vancouver in the early 1970s, he met Mississippi Delta Blues man Johnny Shines, a contemporary blues legend of Robert Johnson.  Goudie then moved to Alabama and studied and played with Johnny Shines, specializing in acoustic slide guitar.  He later met and played with John Hammond Jr., Muddy Waters and Albert Collins to name a few.

In St. John’s, Scott met fellow blues musician Denis Parker and started playing with him over thirty years ago, during the early 1970s. Scott released his critically acclaimed album ‘Renata’ in 1982.”

Darrell Duke – Mother’s Salt Beef

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

“(The song) speaks of the reason I left in the first place; to find work; missing my baby girl (now 21), playing gigs with my brother and best friend, Barry, (who’s been living in Alberta for years), Sundays at home after Mass with family, singing and playing guitars and laughing ‘til it hurt at my late Uncle Cyril’s stories and jokes, and, perhaps, in the end (of the song), a hope that those feelings of despair and loneliness from missing home would dissipate somewhat through time spent with new friends and long-lost relatives…… and maybe the song and it’s message might allow a bit of comfort.”

– Darrell Duke speaks about his single-song release with www.thecharter.ca

Great Big Sea – Safe Upon the Shore

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

“Safe Upon the Shore” is the 11th release from arguably Newfoundland and Labrador’s most successful musical group. True ambassadors for the music and culture of the island, they have been representing our province all over the world for 20 years. Recording for the latest album was split between the now retired Great Big Studio in St. John’s and The Music Shed in New Orleans. This lends itself to a distinct merging of the traditional sound that has become the GBS trademark and a rowdy, southern flare that is characteristically Louisiana. The album also boasts a pretty impressive list of co-writers including Joel Plaskett, Randy Bachman, Russell Crowe, Jeremy Fisher and Paul Lamb. This southern element proves that Great Big Sea are unafraid to venture into uncharted musical territory. If the listener is of the same mind, they will thoroughly enjoy this record.

Monday Nights – The Monday Nights

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

This is the first release from a band comprised of some of the city’s finest musicians: Kalem Mahoney (formerly of Gearbox), Mark Neary and Elliot Dicks (The Novaks), Grant King (Pathological Lovers) and Brad Power (every band that needed a virtuosic guitar player). This coming together of talent yielded a fantastic record of folk and pop rock that is both thoughtfully arranged and masterfully performed. At the helm of the project is primary songwriter, Kalem Mahoney. Kalem is highly regarded as one of the finer songwriters in Newfoundland and has been called upon to write songs for many artists, perhaps most notably Great Big Sea (Shines Right through Me and Hard Case). His writing deals with a number of themes that range from love lost (Old Friend), the fatigue and monotony of living life in a town that seems stagnant (Old Dirt Town) or struggling to get out of old routines and trials of feeling low. There remains, however an element of hope in his writing and these themes are supplemented with some great, upbeat and driving rock songs, perhaps most notably, Big City Lights and Stereo Loud. Kalem’s vocal has a weathered charm that gives credence to his words and is elevated by impressive guitar, Rhodes piano and Hammond organ. The solid combo of Neary on bass and Dicks on drums also gives the record a solid backbone. This album is a killer offering from one of the province’s premier rock bands.

Sean McCann – Son of a Sailor

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

It is hard to imagine how Sean could muster the time to record a solo album in the midst of a feverish touring such as Great Big Sea’s. Sean describes life on the road as ideal for nurturing the writing process. His second solo release, “Son of a Sailor”, touches on themes resulting from this nomadic lifestyle and the longing for home that it creates. He pays musical tribute to the lives of those who have made their living from work on the sea and despite not relying on fishing as a career himself, portrays the lifestyle with sincerity and a genuine sympathy that is quite touching. Musically, the album is somewhat of a departure from the floorboard shaking, traditional folk rock of Great Big Sea. On a number of the tunes, Sean takes a more soft-spoken, pondering stance as he reflects upon his life away from home and how he has been positively influenced by his roots. He is clearly indebted to the place and people that helped shape his upbringing. He is careful and deliberate with his words and their delivery and the music follows suit. This record is his letter home. He has a seemingly effortless ability to write heartfelt and lasting ballads. His voice sounds warm, familiar and lived in; the voice that has acted as a perfect foil for Alan for 20 years. “Son of a Sailor” offers up a blend of acoustic folk pop with elements of country and bluegrass. It should be noted that the album is certainly not without its upbeat foot stompers. There is a lively country/bluegrass infusion that may be attributed to Sean’s time in New Orleans during the recording of the latest Great Big Sea record. Local bluegrass master, Craig Young serves up some pretty tasty guitar licks on barn burners like “Simple Song”. There are still elements of the traditional folk style that Sean has become known for and these genres blend in a complimentary way on the recording. It fits him well. This is a musically star studded album as well, featuring legendary multi-instrumentalist Kelly Russell (Figgy Duff, The Planks), multi Canadian Country Music Award winner Craig Young, and the boys of GBS. The result is a fine record that shows Sean’s great strength not only as a songwriter but as a confident and versatile solo artist.

Dave Whitty – Let it Rest

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

“Let it Rest” is the solo debut of former At Ship’s End frontman, Dave Whitty. Whereas At Ship’s End offered an up tempo, Celtic rock, Dropkick Murphy(esque) sound, Whitty’s solo record is a contemplative, introspective record of acoustic, folk, singer/songwriter tunes. Whitty, who is locally known for his boisterous, sea shanty-leading vocal and vigorous, percussive guitar, now takes the thoughtful and reflective route with a clean, clear and warm vocal and sparse acoustic guitars arrangements . The confidence of his At Ship’s End performances is still there, it is simply channeled into a more refined and earnest delivery. He is appealing to a more narrative and lyrical-minded audience and his growth as a songwriter is quite evident here.

Pilot to Bombardier – Juliet on Fire Keep Clear

Monday, October 15th, 2012

Pilot to Bombardier began as an RPM Challenge album for creator/songwriter Bryan Power. Now, a few short years later Power has released a wonderful record of reflective, beautifully melancholic songs that display the finest elements of folk-country and Americana. This album has subsequently established Bryan as one of the city’s most important, up and coming singer-songwriters

At Ships End – Awake

Monday, October 15th, 2012

They made a huge splash at the George Street Festival opening for the Dropkick Murphy’s. It was great match. At Ships End pack a mean punch with elements of traditional and Celtic-rock. It is high energy, urgent music accented by fiddle, accordion, electric guitar, bass and drums. Fans of the Murphy’s and Flogging Molly will definitely enjoy “Awake”.

Mark Bragg – Bear Music

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

… It’s a dark, romantic cabaret and he’s got the perfect voice for it…
(London Scene)
…There’s a wiry eloquence to the young man’s tales of open roads, quirky cars, manipulative women and schemes about to go awry…
(The Coast, Halifax, NS)
Mark is a prolific and deeply talented songwriter whose twisted, dark and circus-like rock and roll has made one of Newfoundland’s most interesting, diverse and lauded musicians.

Great Big Sea – The Hard and the Easy

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

An authentically traditional offering from GBS, The Hard and the Easy is comprised of songs taken from the legendary Gerald S. Doyle songbooks made popular in Newfoundland from the 1920’s-60’s. These old songs would have been lost to the ages were it not for Doyle. Many have since adapted the songs in more recent times and this effort by Great Big Sea exemplifies the band’s respect and reverence for these tunes. Again, the traditional approach is adhered to strictly on this album and really gives the listener a sense of the band’s skill and dynamic within the traditional-folk form. Many of the province’s most popular songs can be found on The Hard and the Easy including, Come and I will Sing You (the Twelve Apostles) and River Driver. This is one of our bestselling albums.

Long Distance Runners – Tracks

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

On their full length debut, we find the boys further exploring their stoner rock and folk & bluesy roots on their latest nationally acclaimed debut full length, Tracks. Again, clever wordplay, catchy melodies and sweet harmonies draw the listener into a compelling listening experience. Since its release in April, Tracks has charted on the national Earshot! Charts and peaked recently at #12. The album’s lead-off single ‘Election Day’ just reached #11 on CBC Radio Three’s R3-30 chart while the positive reviews keep coming in.

Mark Bragg and the Black Wedding Band – Reckless Kind

Friday, June 8th, 2012

Tense, tough, tender and melodic. Behold the debut from Mark Bragg, an astute songwriter with a distinctive vocal style. The episodes of intriguing characters are delivered with a visceral and heady beat and a knowing sense of compassion. The Wreckless Kind was one of our three best local releases of 2001 and still remains as a tidemark for supurb songwriting.

Daniel Payne, Aaron Collis, Matthew Byrne – Shed No Tears

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

A couple of years back, three of Newfoundland’s most gifted musicians were set to go on tour together and decided to record an album to help fund their travels. It was originally set to be a limited run of one-hundred or so albums. Once they were sold that would be it. What they failed to anticipate was that the album would catch on and demand for it would continue well after the tour had ended. They needed to record the album quickly before the tour so they set out for Gander, set up a microphone in a shed (SHED No Tears) and recorded the album live, together in full takes (no editing) using only one microphone. This type of recording requires serious skill as musicians and a keen awareness of what each musician is playing at all times. The beauty of this album is the togetherness and incredible execution of the music by three artists who are so strong as soloists that it is hard to imagine them not stepping on each others toes throughout the tunes. They do not. Not even for a second. They are so sympathetic to each others’ playing that the result is a cohesive, fluid and authentic representation of incredible traditional music. Daniel takes on fiddle duties, flute and accordion, Aaron plays accordion and mandolin and Matthew splits his time between vocals, octave mandolin and guitar. The album is a varied mix of fast-paced dance-up tunes interspersed with some ballads that would eventually make it onto Matthew’s solo debut, Ballads (I.e.: The Banks of Newfoundland). “Shed No Tears” also features original compositions by Daniel (Selma Barkhams’s Waltz and Stephanie’s Birthday) and Aaron (Aaron’s Reel). The record is a shining example of the vitality and joy inherent in keeping this traditional genre alive. These three men are ambassadors for the music of Newfoundland. We couldn’t ask for finer representation. This is an incredible, genuine and honest album that will live on well beyond those original one hundred records.

Sean Panting – Man of the Year

Monday, February 20th, 2012

Finally, Sean has a new record!

We have been waiting patiently since his rock offering “Receiver” and the folk(y), acoustic-laden, “Victrola”. Sean sets the bar pretty high for songwriting at home and abroad. Many local songwriters cite him as an influence on their work. His new record, “Man of the Year” is a marriage of all the elements that make for great songs: instantly catchy chorus, infectious hooks and a self-deprecating humour that makes his songs instantly relatable. Sean has a wit and keen understanding of how to turn the perfect musical and lyrical phrase.

This is thoughtful pop at its best and easily Sean’s finest album.

Evan Watts Smith – Turn On The Dark EP

Janet Cull – Hear It

Monday, June 21st, 2021

It’s a challenging task to follow up on a great album and Janet Cull’s 2016 release, “Real Tough Love” was a rock-solid effort featuring the works of several local songwriters. So what next? The artist requires focus and commitment in order to achieve her intention and then it’s simply one foot in front of the other and trust your instincts.

Ms. Cull has done just that and in her liner notes she assures us that her heart, hurt, raw emotions and honesty poured out in these original songs. Perhaps the most significant factor with regard to comparing “Hear It’ with her prior album lies in these numbers being all originals. As accomplished as she is conveying the power and emotion of others words, there’s no interpretation involved in getting down to business in your own songs. Authenticity is the key and Janet has assembled a crack cast of musicians to help carry the message.

The album opens with an old-school spoken word intro leading us into a journey of ‘straight from the heart’ (and shoulder) lyrical messages. The band sets the tone for the entire album instantly, never overpowering the soulful, chameleon-like vocals.

The opening number, “The Only Thing Changing” serves as an anchor for the whole set, the arrangement delicate, balanced and pleasing both musically and vocally.

There is a smooth transition from track to track with “Hear It” embodying all the aesthetic qualities that are layered throughout an album that is both retro and contemporary. The easy, laid-back vibe of “I Wanna Know What Love Is” as well as “Long Gone” and “Sink Or Swim” echoes the sweet late 60’s/early 70’s sounds of Dusty Springfield.

The tuneful “I Turned Woman” resplendent with soft backing vocals, neatly wraps a bow on this very fine collection of originals.

Over the course of her career, Janet Cull has taken the lead as a performer and singer. She has employed the craftiness of both Joe Cocker and Janis Joplin at times as well as swaggering down the same sidewalks as Adele, Amy Winehouse and Alicia Keys. She’s spillin’ it and having a good time doin’ it. Make no mistake, Janet Cull is a boss and you can bet she has indeed achieved her intentions on this album.

ON SALE NOW: $15.98 plus tax.

Together they’ve won a Canadian Folk Music Award, two MusicNL awards, received several ECMA nominations, and they’ve been doing it since before they were legally old enough to play in most venues. But what duo doesn’t eventually need a little space to grow? With the release of his latest single, Nick Earle is literally “Breaking New Ground” as he branches off on his own.

Mallory Johnson – S/T EP

Tuesday, May 28th, 2019

The 2017 Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Spotlight performance winner is no stranger to the stage and has been performing in front of audiences for as long as she can remember. As early as eight years old, she was the youngest ever to perform both Canadian and American National Anthems at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto for an NHL game.

As a former, leading member of the 6-time MusicNL award-winning and ECMA nominated Celtic family group “The Cormiers”, Mallory has recorded multiple albums and has toured Canada, the US, and Scotland.

Adding to her talents, Mallory has also been very busy in musical theatre. She’s performed with The Spirit of Newfoundland, Theatre St. John’s, Peter MacDonald Productions, Best Kind Productions, TaDa Events, and many others. Some past credits include: Grease (Frenchy), Hairspray (Amber), SpiritNL’s Grinch Dressing & Gravy (Cindy-Lou), [title of show] (Heidi), Chicago (Murderess June), Fame (Serena), and Smoky Mountain Songbird; The Music of Dolly Parton (Dolly Parton).

Since her first trip to Nashville to record her debut EP, produced by Kershaw, Mallory has been turning heads in the country music scene and songwriting community, sharing stages with artists like Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Rascal Flatts, and Blake Shelton to name a few. Her debut single “Tupelo” reached #6 on the Canadian Country iTunes Top Songs list and found a home on GAC and CMT.com. Her following single “Good Mistake to Make” broke the top 50 on the Music Row Chart and top 30 on the CDX Breakout Chart. In May of 2018, Mallory released her EP, which earned her a 2019 ECMA for Country Recording of the Year, and three 2018 MusicNL nominations for Female Artist of the Year, Country Artist of the Year, and Rising Star.

Even though most of the songs on her debut project were penned by other writers, Mallory’s writing certainly hasn’t taken a back seat. She was recently invited to showcase new music at the 2018 CCMA Songwriter Series and the 2018 MusicNL Songwriter Circle, as well as received an Honorable Mention during the 19th Annual NSAI Song Contest. She is also currently working on a film project. Following an audition for the war thriller “Into the Wilderness”, Mallory was not only offered a role in the movie, but asked to write music for the soundtrack.

Bernie Leroux – Empty Sounds

Tuesday, May 14th, 2019

BERNIE LEROUX hails from Bay Verte and has created a lovely folk/country/pop album that harkens back to mid-period John Prine and classic Eric Anderson with proper sensitivity to the intermingling of acoustic guitars with bass and percussion and overall spare production values. Both human nature and Mother Nature are addressed and used as pivots to articulate the singer/songwriter’s thoughts, feelings and ponderings on this very pleasent offering.

Selina Boland – The Cold

Thursday, April 4th, 2019

Laverne Squires daughter, Selina Boland with her spring release, ‘The Cold’.

This 6 song offering of Selina originals is dedicated to the memory of her beautiful mother, Laverne Squires, pictured on the poster held by Selina. These songs are bare-bones, wonderfully poignant and directly from the heart.
For those of you that are unaware of the legend, Laverne Squires, she was the most original singer to emerge in our province in the late 1960’s. Her natural vocal gift was extraordinary and impact spellbinding and everlasting. Selina treasures having sung some of these songs with her mother just a few years before her passing.
